Human Influence on Succession

A chalk grassland full of orchids looks like a natural habitat. It is not one – it is a woodland that has been stopped part way. This last page is about human activity interrupting succession, and about the awkward fact that sometimes we want it interrupted.

Where succession was heading

Given any specific set of environmental conditions, ecological succession tends to lead to a particular type of climax community, and which one that is depends on the biome. In a temperate climate we would expect succession to eventually result in temperate forest.

That is the baseline. Human activities can stop it happening.

Two ways humans prevent a climax community

Both of these should feel familiar. Grazing preventing seedlings is the same mechanism that drives the cyclic succession of wood pasture from the previous page – the difference is that in wood pasture the thorny scrub gives seedlings an escape, and under continuous livestock grazing it does not. Wetland drainage is the same activity that appeared under carbon sequestration: draining a bog stops it storing carbon and stops it forming in the first place.

When interrupting succession is a good thing

Here is the part that catches students out, because it does not fit the usual “human activity bad” pattern. In some instances the interruption of succession is important for the maintenance of certain types of ecosystem.

Without grazing, important habitats such as heathlands, meadows and chalk grasslands would be lost. They would turn into scrub and then woodland, taking their specialised species with them. These habitats exist because succession has been held back, and they are valued for the biodiversity they support.

This is why “controlled grazing” appeared as a restoration technique two pages ago. Interrupting succession is sometimes the management.
If a question asks you to evaluate the effect of grazing on an ecosystem, resist the reflex to say it is damaging. The accurate answer is that grazing prevents the climax community forming, which reduces the ecosystem in one sense and maintains a valued habitat in another. Naming both sides is what gets the top band.

Explain an interruption

Explain why a woodland community fails to develop on land that is continuously grazed by sheep. (3 marks)

Point 1: the expected outcome In a temperate biome, succession would normally lead to a climax community of temperate forest. Point 2: what grazing does Sheep consume tree seedlings, so the seedlings cannot establish. Point 3: the result The later stages of succession cannot take place, so the community is held at the grassland stage and no forest develops. The seedlings are eaten before they can become the next stage start by saying what should have happened – it frames the whole answer

Apply to wetlands

Explain how draining a wetland prevents the formation of a peat bog. (2 marks)

Point 1: what peat needs Peat forms where waterlogged, anaerobic and acidic conditions prevent dead plant matter decomposing fully. Point 2: what drainage does Drainage removes the waterlogged conditions, so decomposers become active and the organic matter breaks down rather than accumulating as peat. No waterlogging, no incomplete decomposition, no peat this links straight back to carbon sequestration – the same mechanism, a different question

Evaluate

A conservation group removes all livestock from an area of chalk grassland. Suggest one advantage and one disadvantage of this decision. (2 marks)

Advantage Succession can continue towards the climax community for the biome, which will support a different and more complex set of species with greater food web complexity. Disadvantage Chalk grassland is lost, along with the specialised species that depend on it, as scrub and then woodland take over. You gain a woodland and lose a grassland an evaluate question wants both directions – a one-sided answer caps at half marks
