Photosynthesis as an Energy Input

Almost all the energy in almost every ecosystem comes through one doorway: a green leaf. ESS does not ask for the biochemistry. It asks what goes in, what comes out, and what the process does for the ecosystem — which is where the marks are.

The equation, in words

Inputs, processes, outputs, transformations

ESS uses a systems vocabulary, and photosynthesis questions are often set in exactly these four words. Learn them as four separate labels.

Systems term For photosynthesis
Inputs Sunlight as the energy source, carbon dioxide from the air, water from the soil
Processes Chlorophyll inside chloroplasts absorbs certain wavelengths of visible light and that energy is used to build sugars
Outputs Glucose and oxygen
Transformations Light energy is transformed into stored chemical energy in glucose

That biomass is the energy every consumer in the ecosystem depends on.
Every arrow here is either matter or energy crossing a boundary. That is the systems view an ESS answer should use.

From glucose to biomass

Glucose is a starting material, not a finished product. The plant uses some of it straight away as a respiratory substrate — the fuel it burns to release energy for growth and repair. The rest is built into cellulose for cell walls, starch for storage, and the proteins and oils that make up the plant body.

That stored material is biomass, and it is the only reason herbivores can exist. When you draw a pyramid of biomass later in this topic, this is where the bottom bar comes from.

Notice the word “primary” in primary producer. It is not a ranking of importance — it means first. Producers are the first place energy enters living things, which is why they always sit at the base of a pyramid.

Why so little sunlight is captured

Worth remembering: the inefficiency starts before any animal has eaten anything. Even the first step, sunlight to plant biomass, captures only a small percentage of the energy arriving.

Inputs Light energy, carbon dioxide, water Outputs Glucose and oxygen Transformation light energy → stored chemical energy Light is an input because it is what the system takes in. It is not a reactant in the word equation.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Explain why photosynthesis is described as the entry point of energy into an ecosystem.

Step 1: name the conversion Producers convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. Step 2: why that matters Consumers cannot use light energy directly. They can only obtain energy by eating other organisms. Step 3: the consequence So all the chemical energy in every trophic level above the producers originally came through photosynthesis. Producers are the only doorway for energy into the food chain A strong answer says what consumers cannot do, not only what producers can.
