Population Structure and Models

A population is not just a number. It has a shape — how many children, how many workers, how many elderly. Learn to read that shape off a graph and you can describe a country’s birth rate, life expectancy and future problems without being told a single figure.

What an age-sex pyramid shows

The composition of a human population can be modelled and compared using age-sex pyramids. You will also see them called population pyramids, age-gender pyramids or age structure diagrams — all the same thing.

An age-sex pyramid is a graphical representation of a population’s age and sex structure, showing the percentage or number of people in each age group and sex. It is drawn as a horizontal bar graph:

The three groups a pyramid identifies

Worth knowing. The relationship between these groups is sometimes written as a dependency ratio: (young dependents + old dependents) ÷ economically active, × 100. A high ratio means a small working group is supporting a lot of people, whichever end of the pyramid the pressure comes from.

What pyramids are used for

Policymakers and economists use age-sex pyramids to understand population trends, forecast future growth and plan social and economic policies. They are also used in public health, education and social welfare to plan for the needs of specific age groups, so governments can estimate and plan their spending.

🧩 Four things to check on any pyramid

  1. The young. Is the base wide or narrow — is the birth rate high or low?
  2. The working population. Are there enough people of working age to support the young and old dependents?
  3. The elderly. Is the top broad or narrow? A broad top means high life expectancy.
  4. The male and female split. Any noticeable difference between the two sides? A wider female top usually means women live longer in that country.
Narrow sections partway up a pyramid are not random. A missing slice usually means a historic fall in the birth rate, or a rise in the death rate from war or disaster. A bulge often means large-scale migration. If a question shows you a dent, say what caused it.

The demographic transition model

The DTM shows how a population changes over time as a country develops: from a pre-industrial stage with high crude birth rates and high crude death rates, to an economically advanced stage with low or declining birth rates and low death rates. It has five generalised stages.

The two models fit together. A stage 2 country has an expansive pyramid; a stage 4 country has a column. If a question gives you a pyramid and asks about the DTM, match the shape to the stage and explain your reasoning — that is exactly the link examiners are looking for.

Interpreting a pyramid shape

A pyramid has a narrow base, a bulge between 40 and 60, and a reasonably broad top. What does the shape tell you about the population structure of the country? (4 marks)

Point 1: the base The narrow base means a low birth rate, and therefore a low number of young dependents. Point 2: the top A reasonably broad top means high life expectancy, so people are living into old age. Point 3: the middle Most of the population sits between 40 and 60, so the working-age group is currently large. Point 4: the future As that bulge ages, the country will have a large number of elderly dependents supported by a much smaller working group. Low birth rate, high life expectancy, and an ageing problem coming the future consequence is the mark most answers miss — always look ahead twenty years

Comparing two pyramids over time

Age-sex pyramids for Mexico in 1980 and 2010 are shown. Describe the changes in Mexico’s population structure between the two years. (3 marks)

Change 1: the working population In 2010 there are more economically active people aged 15 to 64 than in 1980. Change 2: the elderly There are more old dependents aged 65 and over, so life expectancy has risen. Change 3: the base There are more young dependents in total, but the bands up to age 19 have become more even, showing the birth rate has started to fall. More workers, more elderly, and a base that is levelling off describe means say what changed; do not spend time explaining why unless asked

Identifying a DTM stage

A country has a high birth rate, a falling death rate and a rapidly rising total population. Identify its stage in the demographic transition model and justify your answer. (3 marks)

Step 1: identify The country is in stage 2. Step 2: justify with the birth rate Birth rates remain high because people are still having large families, so this cannot be stage 3 or 4. Step 3: justify with the death rate Death rates are falling because of improved diets, better healthcare, lower infant mortality and access to clean water, so it is past stage 1. Step 4: the consequence Births now greatly exceed deaths, giving a large natural increase and a rapidly rising population. Stage 2: high births, falling deaths, so the widest gap between the two lines justify means use the data given, not just name the stage
