Reproductive Isolation and Speciation

A river split one ape population into two, and millions of years later we call them bonobos and chimpanzees. That is speciation, and it always starts the same way: something stops two groups exchanging genes.

What reproductive isolation is

Reproductive isolation occurs when different populations of a species can no longer interbreed. This prevents gene flow between them — they no longer interchange genes during the production of offspring — and over time it leads to the development of new species.

Definition Reproductive isolation — when populations of a species can no longer interbreed, preventing gene flow between them and eventually leading to speciation.

It can occur through physical barriers (geographical isolation) or through differences in behaviour or ecology (behavioural or ecological isolation).

Geographical isolation

The barrier at stage 2 does not create new species. It creates the conditions under which stage 3 can happen, over a very long time.

Geographic isolation occurs when physical barriers such as rivers, mountains or oceans separate populations, preventing mating between individuals from each group. Speciation follows because:

Named example: bonobos and common chimpanzees. These were once part of the same species. The Congo River in Africa separated the two populations and prevented interbreeding. Over time each developed different physical and behavioural traits, eventually becoming distinct species.

Ecological and behavioural isolation

Populations living in the same area, with no geographic barrier between them, can still become reproductively isolated if they occupy different ecological niches or develop different behaviours. Those differences prevent interbreeding even though the populations live close together.

Named example: the apple maggot fly (Rhagoletis pomonella). Originally it laid its eggs on hawthorn trees in North America. When apple trees were introduced, some flies began laying on apples instead. Because these flies mate in the same place they feed, the two groups now mate on different plants — they have become behaviourally isolated, and are in the early stages of speciation.

Whatever the mechanism, the outcome is identical: two groups that no longer exchange genes and therefore start to diverge.

Endemism and islands

Endemism refers to species found only in one specific geographical area, such as an island. Islands, especially those far from the mainland, often have high rates of endemic species because of geographical isolation. Pygmy three-toed sloths, for instance, are found only on a small island off the coast of Panama.

Named example: Hawaiian honeycreepers. These birds are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. There are many different species, each adapted to a specific niche. Some occur on single islands, others across several, but all are endemic to Hawaii. The isolation of the islands created unique conditions for them to evolve separately, producing many species that exist nowhere else.
Speciation is slow, and that is a marking point in itself. Reproductive isolation is only the start — enough genetic differences have to accumulate between the populations before two species exist. The apple maggot fly is described as being in the early stages of speciation for exactly that reason. Do not write as though a barrier appears and two species pop out.

Geographical isolation

Explain how geographical isolation can lead to speciation, using a named example. (4 marks)

Step 1: the barrier A physical barrier such as a river separates one population into two, preventing mating between them and stopping gene flow. Step 2: divergence The two populations then evolve differently because of their unique environments, and random mutations change the alleles present in each. Step 3: the threshold When the genetic differences become great enough that members of the two populations can no longer interbreed to produce fertile offspring, speciation has occurred. Step 4: the example Bonobos and common chimpanzees were once one species, separated by the Congo River. Over time they developed different physical and behavioural traits and became distinct species. Barrier, no gene flow, divergence, then no fertile offspring say the process takes a very long time — it is a credited point

Isolation without a barrier

Explain how populations living in the same area can become reproductively isolated. (3 marks)

Step 1: the principle Populations with no geographic barrier between them can still become isolated if they occupy different ecological niches or develop different behaviours. Step 2: the example The apple maggot fly originally laid eggs on hawthorn trees. When apple trees were introduced, some flies began laying on apples instead. Step 3: why this isolates them These flies mate in the same location they feed, so the two groups now mate on different plants and interbreeding between them has decreased. They are behaviourally isolated and in the early stages of speciation. Same place, different niche, so no shared mating site seasonal, mechanical and behavioural changes are all valid alternatives

Endemism on islands

Suggest why isolated islands have high rates of endemism. (3 marks)

Step 1: the definition Endemic species are found only in one specific geographical area. Step 2: the isolation Islands far from the mainland are geographically isolated, so populations that arrive cannot interbreed with mainland populations and gene flow stops. Step 3: independent evolution Each island population then evolves separately under its own unique conditions, producing species that exist nowhere else — as with the Hawaiian honeycreepers, each adapted to a specific niche. Isolation plus time equals species found in only one place pygmy three-toed sloths off Panama work equally well as the example
