Indigenous Land Management

Indigenous Australians used controlled burning to prevent catastrophic wildfires long before fire ecology existed as a discipline. These are not folk customs that happen to work — they are land management systems refined over generations, and they are now under pressure from both outside and within.

What these methods are

Traditional Indigenous land management refers to the methods used by Indigenous communities to care for and sustain the natural environment over generations. They focus on long-term sustainability, ensuring the land remains productive and healthy for future generations, and they maintain balance in the ecosystems where they occur.

Why they are considered sustainable

These methods focus on working with nature rather than over-exploiting it, helping preserve biodiversity and ecosystem balance.

Be clear on the difference between traditional Indigenous methods and modern land management, and focus on how Indigenous methods prioritise sustainability. Be careful not to romanticise: the internal threats are real, and they arise from communities facing the same economic pressures as everyone else.
