The planetary boundaries model puts a number on how far we can push the Earth system before things start breaking. Biodiversity has its own boundary, it has its own name in the model, and — awkwardly — we have already crossed it.

The model asks: for each of those processes, how far can we push before the system flips into a different state? That threshold is the boundary. Staying inside it is described as the safe operating space for humanity.

The biodiversity planetary boundary (biosphere integrity) is the limit within which humanity can safely operate while maintaining the Earth’s biodiversity and the functioning of its ecosystems.
The nine boundaries include climate change, ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone depletion, atmospheric aerosol loading, biogeochemical flows (nitrogen and phosphorus), freshwater change, land-system change, novel entities such as chemical pollution, and biosphere integrity.
You do not need to recite all nine perfectly, but you should be able to name several and, more importantly, explain that they interact. Land-system change drives biodiversity loss; climate change drives it too. Cross one boundary and you push others.
Safe, uncertain, or high risk
The model does not use a single hard line. It uses three zones, because scientists are honest about not knowing exactly where the tipping point sits.
Crossing the boundary does not mean the system has collapsed. It means we have left the range we know is safe and are running an experiment with unknown results.
Where biodiversity currently stands
Biodiversity loss is happening at an alarming rate because of human activities such as deforestation, pollution and overfishing, plus human-induced climate change.
Scientists estimate that we have already crossed the biodiversity planetary boundary. In plain terms: the current rate of species extinction is higher than the safe limit.
Why this boundary is so serious. Biosphere integrity is described as a core boundary because so much else depends on it. Losing species means losing genetic diversity, and losing ecosystem functioning means losing the services that every other system relies on.
Getting back inside the boundary
Conservation and ecosystem regeneration measures can be used to reverse the decline, with the aim of moving back towards the safe operating space. But this only works if it happens at every scale at once.
Exam answers that only mention individual behaviour lose marks. The model expects you to scale up from personal choices to international agreements.

Financial incentives for businesses and farmers to adopt environmentally friendly practices.
4. International efforts
Taking part in treaties and agreements such as the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Contributing to international funds that support biodiversity projects in developing countries.
Sharing scientific knowledge and technology across borders.
The most valuable sentence you can write here is about where the biodiversity is versus where the money is. The most biodiverse countries are often the least wealthy, which is exactly why international funding and fair benefit sharing appear in the list at all.

Crossing a boundary is not the same as collapse. It means moving into a zone of rising and uncertain risk.
The boundary is not a precise number. The uncertainty zone exists precisely because the threshold is not known exactly.
Biosphere integrity is not just species count. It covers genetic diversity and ecosystem functioning too.
The nine boundaries are not independent. They interact, so pressure on one increases pressure on others.
The model is not a law. It is a scientific framework, and the exact values are debated — worth a sentence in an evaluation.
Do not confuse the planetary boundaries model with the Convention on Biological Diversity. One is a scientific framework, the other is a treaty.
