Climate Change and Human Societies

A flood is not the same event for everyone it touches. The water is identical; the outcome depends on whether there is a warning system, a sea wall, a hospital and money to rebuild. That gap between hazard and outcome is the whole of this page, and it is where the best exam answers live.

Same hazard, different outcome

Start with the distinction that runs through this whole section. A hazard is the physical event: the heatwave, the storm surge, the failed rainy season. The impact is what that event does to real people, and it depends on how exposed they are and how well they can respond. Two coastal cities can face the same one-metre surge and end up with completely different death tolls.

The disaster is largely socio-economic. The Netherlands and Bangladesh both flood. They do not both drown.
The Netherlands has invested heavily in flood defences over decades. Bangladesh faces a larger, more frequent flood risk with a fraction of the resources. Same physics, different consequence.

The four impact areas

Saying so in an answer shows systems thinking, which is what ESS rewards.
Nothing here stays in its box. A drought damages the harvest, which raises food prices, which worsens nutrition, which increases illness — and the health system is already strained by the heat.

Health

Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense, and they are most dangerous to the very young, the elderly and people with existing conditions. The North American heatwave of June 2021 hit the Pacific Northwest and western Canada, killed hundreds of people, overwhelmed hospitals and caused power cuts as grids struggled with air-conditioning demand. Warmer temperatures also widen the range of disease-carrying insects, allowing malaria and dengue to reach places that were previously too cool. Air quality falls too: heat speeds up the formation of ground-level ozone, wildfires load the air with smoke and particulates, and stagnant conditions stop pollutants dispersing.

Water supply

Longer, more severe droughts reduce how much water is available — Cape Town’s “Day Zero” crisis in 2018 is the standard example. In mountain regions, melting glaciers are a trap: they release plenty of water at first, then far less once the ice is gone, which threatens supplies for millions of people downstream of the Andes and the Himalaya. Heavier rainfall causes flooding that contaminates drinking water with sewage and chemicals, and warmer water combined with fertiliser run-off encourages harmful algal blooms, as has repeatedly happened in Lake Erie.

Agriculture

Changed temperature and rainfall directly affect what can be grown and how much. Heat stress has cut wheat yields in Australia and India. Warmer conditions let agricultural pests survive winters and spread further. Livestock suffer too — heat-stressed dairy cows produce less milk. The result is a less reliable food supply and higher prices, which hurts low-income households first.

Infrastructure

Stronger storms and floods damage roads, railways, bridges and buildings. UK railways have been disrupted repeatedly by flooding and by heat buckling rails. Buildings cost more to cool and more to repair, and coastal erosion is eating away at seafront property. Power grids fail during extreme weather at exactly the moment people most need them.

Urban and rural differ too. Cities deal with heat islands, air pollution and dense infrastructure at risk. Rural areas are more exposed through farming and water availability. If a question names a setting, use it.

Perspectives on climate change

People do not respond to climate data. They respond to what they have seen, what they value and what their government is doing. ESS asks you to recognise several layers of this.

When a question asks about perspectives, do not just list opinions. Explain why a group holds the view it does — their experience, their economic position, their culture. The reason is where the marks are.

Explain why two countries experiencing similar climate hazards may suffer very different impacts. [4]

Point 1 — economic resources A wealthier country can fund defences, emergency services and rebuilding, so the same event causes less lasting damage. Point 2 — infrastructure and adaptive capacity Flood barriers, reliable warning systems and drought-tolerant agriculture reduce exposure before the hazard arrives. Point 3 — social equity Where poverty and inequality are high, vulnerable groups have fewer options to evacuate, insure or relocate. Point 4 — named contrast The Netherlands has advanced flood defences, while Bangladesh remains highly vulnerable to flooding with far fewer resources. 4 / 4 The named contrast at the end turns a general answer into a strong one.

Outline how climate change can affect human health. [3]

Effect 1 — direct heat More frequent and intense heatwaves cause heat-related illness and death, especially among the elderly and the very young. Effect 2 — disease range Warmer conditions expand the habitat of disease-carrying insects, spreading malaria and dengue into new areas.
