IB Business Management SLTopic 8 — The Pre-Released StatementPaper 1Core skill~9 min read
Getting Started With the Statement
The previous session’s pre-release introduced Myt PLC, a multinational drinks manufacturer under pressure from three directions at once. Even if this is not your exam year, it is worth working through: the company is different, but the skill of turning a short statement into a revision plan is identical.
What you need to know
The statement was issued in February and introduced Myt PLC, a multinational non-alcoholic drinks manufacturer.
It gave the first five paragraphs of the case study plus a short terminology list.
Myt began with a single root beer and now sells over 30 different drinks in bottles and cans.
In 2023 it bought Lotssa Coffee, a chain of more than 4,000 coffee shops in 35 countries, and Honest Water, a bottled water manufacturer.
It faces health criticism over sugar and caffeine, and even its diet versions are questioned.
It plans greener factories, lower sugar and caffeine, and better CSR, and is eyeing the healthy snacks market.
It has factories on six continents, which is what makes it multinational.
What Myt owns
Get the shape of the group clear first. Almost every question hangs off one of these boxes.
The dashed box matters as much as the solid ones. A plan a company is considering is exactly what discuss questions are built on.
The three pressures on Myt
What makes this case study work is that Myt is being squeezed from three directions, and the responses to one pressure often make another one worse.
Three arrows, one company. Any answer that only sees one of them is missing two thirds of the case.
The story in five points
What the statement says
Why the examiner put it there
Myt grew from one root beer to over 30 drinks, and also bought two companies.
Internal and external growth in a single sentence. Ansoff and types of growth are on the table.
It uses social media influencers to promote its drinks.
Modern promotion. Expect questions on the marketing mix and on digital marketing.
Some drinks are high in sugar and caffeine, linked to obesity and diabetes. Diet versions using sweeteners are also criticised.
Ethics and business objectives. Note the trap: the “healthy” option is criticised too.
In 2023 it acquired Lotssa Coffee and Honest Water.
Diversification and acquisitions. Also raises whether Myt can manage very different businesses.
It plans greener factories, lower sugar and caffeine, and better CSR, and is considering healthy snacks and computer-generated avatars in adverts.
CSR, circular models, operations, product development and technology, all signposted at once.
Notice the pattern across both sessions. A big established firm, a sustainability problem, a growth decision, and one new technology. That is the shape the IB keeps choosing, whatever the industry.
Spending your five hours
A plan that works for any pre-release
Read the paragraphs three times and mark the line numbers you might quote.
Define every word on the list in one sentence of your own.
Learn the industries — here that means soft drinks, bottled water and healthy snacks.
Map each hint to a topic or tool: growth to Ansoff, sustainability to circular models, portfolio to BCG.
Write two or three timed answers using only what you have. Application, not recall.
Five paragraphs this time, four the next. The number of paragraphs released varies by session, and so does the exact terminology list. Work from the copy your school gives you rather than from any summary, including this one.
WORKED EXAMPLE
Define the term multinational company. [2]
Statement 1
A business that operates in more than one country [1]
Statement 2
It usually has its headquarters in one country and factories, offices or stores in others [1]
2 marksMyt having factories on six continents is what makes it multinational, but you do not need that for a define answer.
WORKED EXAMPLE
Explain one reason why Myt’s plan to reduce sugar could be risky. [2]
Step 1: the point
Changing a recipe changes the taste, and customers buy soft drinks largely on taste [1]
Step 2: apply itMyt’s original root beer and top-selling sodas have loyal buyers, so a reformulated version could push some of them towards competitors whose recipes have not changed [1]2 marksThe best answers on this case always find the cost hiding inside the good deed.
Exam tip
Learn the group structure first. Soft drinks, coffee, water, maybe snacks. Everything else hangs off it.
Note the 2023 acquisitions by name. Lotssa Coffee and Honest Water are your application detail.
Remember diet drinks are criticised too. It stops you writing a naive “just use sweeteners” answer.
Keep the three pressures in view. Health, environment, growth. Good answers connect at least two.
Work from your own copy of the statement for line numbers.
Stop at five hours. More reading has almost no marginal value; more writing does.
Common mix-up
Thinking Myt makes coffee and water itself. It bought companies that do. That is external growth.
Assuming healthy snacks is a done deal. It is under consideration, which is why it makes a good discuss question.
Treating the pre-release as the full case. The data arrives on exam day.
Confusing multinational with large. Multinational means operating across countries, not simply being big.
Ignoring the influencer detail. It is the clearest marketing hook in the whole statement.
Learning a practice case study as fact. It is rehearsal, not prediction.
