Bringing Circular Business Models Into Your Answers

This is the tool that ties the whole 2026 statement together. ABC is a company that digs rock out of the ground and a company that pulls gold out of rubbish. One of those is linear and one is circular, and the tension between them is the most interesting thing about the case.

📚 What you need to know

Linear versus circular

Two ways to run a business that uses materials ABC’s concrete arm is the top one. Its e-waste arm is the bottom one THE LINEAR WAY: take, make, use, throw away TAKE dig up materials MAKE cement, concrete USE build with it THROW AWAY rubble to landfill THE CIRCULAR WAY: materials keep going round MAKE USE RECOVER AND REUSE DESIGN TO LAST CIRCULAR MODEL In a circular model, waste is treated as a raw material you already own. That is exactly what ABC’s scientists accidentally proved.
The difference is not really about recycling. It is about designing the business so the end of one product is the start of the next.

ABC’s two loops

ABC already has one loop running. The interesting exam argument is that it could build a second, and the second one is easier.

The two loops ABC can close One is already running. The other is the easier win LOOP 1: electronics (running since 2024) Old devices phones, boards ABC plant recovers gold Gold sold to manufacturers New products back in use LOOP 2: construction (not built yet) Old buildings demolished Rubble crushed into aggregate Mixed again into concrete New buildings less quarrying
Loop 2 uses skills ABC already has and customers it already serves. That is why it is the strategy most worth recommending.

What ABC gains from going circular

AdvantageWhat it looks like at ABC
Less wasteEvery tonne of circuit boards processed is a tonne kept out of landfill, and crushed old concrete keeps demolition rubble out too.
Less dependence on raw materialsRecovered gold reduces the need for mining; recycled aggregate reduces the need for new quarrying.
Cost savings and new revenueRecovered metals are a second income stream, and efficiency projects cut the energy bill in the concrete plants.
Better reputationA genuine circular story supports ABC’s CSR objectives and helps when bidding for public infrastructure work.
Protection from price shocksIf limestone or gold prices rise, recycled inputs give ABC an alternative supply it partly controls.

And the honest problems

WHAT MAKES IT WORK

ABC already understands bulk materials at industrial scale.

Its e-waste process is genuinely lower energy, not just marketing.

Governments increasingly reward circular firms.

Both loops sell into markets ABC can reach.

WHAT COULD STOP IT

Collecting the used material is the hard, unglamorous part.

Recycled aggregate must pass strict safety standards.

Circular equipment costs money upfront.

Cement’s emissions do not go away just because ABC recycles.

🤔 The greenwashing question you should always raise

A circular business model is a claim about the whole company, not one division. ABC could recycle every circuit board in Country Z and still be its largest carbon emitter, because the kiln is where the emissions come from. If ABC advertises circularity while cement emissions stay flat, pressure groups will call it greenwashing and the reputation gain reverses into a reputation loss. The safest strategy is to fix something real in the concrete business too — which is precisely why recycled aggregate matters so much.

Worked examples

WORKED EXAMPLE

Define the term circular business model. [2]

Clause 1 — the category A circular business model is an approach to business designed to reduce waste and the use of scarce resources. Clause 2 — what makes it different Materials are recycled, reused or recovered and put back into production, rather than being thrown away after a single use. Both marks earned “Rather than being thrown away” is the contrast with the linear model. That is the second mark.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Analyse the advantages and disadvantages to ABC of adopting a circular business model. [6]

Advantage 1 — two income streams from waste Recovering gold from circuit boards turns something other firms pay to dispose of into revenue, and crushing old concrete into aggregate reduces spending on quarried limestone. Advantage 2 — reputation and contracts Public construction projects increasingly demand sustainable materials, so a credible circular story helps ABC win work it might otherwise lose to greener rivals. Disadvantage 1 — the money goes out first Collection systems, crushing equipment and safety measures for toxic metals all cost money now, while the savings arrive later. With concrete margins under pressure, that is a real cash flow problem. Disadvantage 2 — it does not fix the main problem Cement emissions come from the kiln, not from waste handling. A circular model improves the edges of ABC’s footprint while the core stays carbon-intensive, which leaves the company open to accusations of greenwashing. Two each way, all applied to ABC The last point is the one that lifts this answer. Most students will only list benefits.
