Is Drug Treatment Too Reductionist?
The last two pages both assumed the same thing: a chemical problem, so a chemical solution. This page puts that assumption on trial. It is the most philosophical topic in the sub-unit and also the easiest place to pick up marks, because most students can define reductionism but very few can argue with it.
📘 What you need to know
The holism–reductionism debate asks whether behaviour is best explained by breaking it into parts or by considering many interacting factors together.
Reductionism = a simple, “reduced” explanation for a complex behaviour.
Biological reductionism explains behaviour through biological functions and structures — genes, neurotransmitters, hormones.
Environmental reductionism explains it through the environment instead, such as where someone grew up.
Holism considers biological, psychological and social factors together.
Levels of explanation: biological reductionism is the lowest level, holism the highest. The same behaviour can be described at several levels at once.
A paradigm is a set of shared assumptions and methods in a discipline. A paradigm shift is when a field moves on through a scientific revolution.
Levels of explanation
The point of the ladder below is not that one rung is right and the others wrong. It is that the same case of depression can be truthfully described at every level, and each description leaves something out.
Reading upwards adds context but loses precision. Reading downwards adds precision but loses the person. Every explanation in this whole topic sits somewhere on this stack.
Where reductionism shows up in this topic
The monoamine hypothesis assumes abnormal serotonin levels cause depression.
Drug therapies such as SSRIs and NRT assume behaviour results from neurochemical imbalances.
Genetic explanations of MDD assume depression is highly heritable, which pushes environmental influences into the background.
By contrast, a holistic account of the same case would consider biology, thinking style, relationships, income and culture together.
Do not treat reductionism as a dirty word. It is how most successful science works. The question is whether the level you have chosen is the right one for the problem in front of you.
Evaluation of biological reductionism
Strengths
Scientific clarity. Narrowing the question makes it answerable, measurable and comparable across studies.
It isolates variables. Studying one factor, such as dopamine and addiction, makes it far easier to design studies and test hypotheses properly.
Practical applications. Reductionist work on serotonin transport led to effective drug therapies including SSRIs, and to NRT for nicotine addiction. Real treatments came out of it.
It made psychology more credible as a science, because objective, replicable methods could be applied to problems that had previously been described only in words.
Limitations
Oversimplification. Human behaviour is complex, and reducing it to one gene or one neurotransmitter neglects lived experience — stress, trauma, poverty, social support.
The mechanism is not fully understood. Drug therapies reduce symptoms, but it remains unclear exactly why, or how much of the improvement is placebo.
It can misdirect treatment. If depression is treated only as a chemical problem, the job loss or the abusive relationship that triggered it is never addressed.
It removes the person from the picture. A patient becomes a set of receptors rather than someone with a history.
EXAM QUESTION
Discuss the use of biological reductionism in explaining or treating one disorder. [22]
Step 1: define the debate, not just the wordReductionism versus holism; biological versus environmental reductionism; levels of explanation.Step 2: show it operating in real examplesMonoamine hypothesis, SSRIs, NRT, genetic explanations of MDD.Step 3: argue both sides properlyScientific clarity and real treatments on one side; oversimplification, unclear mechanism and the placebo question on the other.Step 4: land a judgementReductionism is a useful research tool but an incomplete treatment philosophy. Combined therapy is the practical answer.Use the levels-of-explanation idea to structure the whole essay

Perspective
Levels of explanation are part of reductionism, and they raise the question of whether psychology counts as a science in the way physics does. Psychology cannot follow the laws of the “hard” sciences, so it uses levels of explanation instead. Kuhn (1990) described psychology as a pre-science for exactly this reason: it lacks a single agreed paradigm, and several approaches compete at once.
Change
A paradigm is a set of shared assumptions and methods — the biological approach’s assumption that depression results from a neurochemical imbalance is one. A paradigm shift happens when a field moves forward through a scientific revolution: new ideas gain traction, research accumulates that contradicts the old assumptions, and eventually the old paradigm is discarded. The classic example is the discovery that the earth is round rather than flat.
Something like this happened in mental health. The biological approach moved to the forefront of research in the 1980s as scanning and measurement technology improved, and that line runs through to cognitive neuroscience today. Whether the pendulum is now swinging back towards holistic, whole-person treatment is a live question — and a good essay can say so.
💡 Exam tip
Give both types of reductionism. Students who only mention the biological one lose easy marks.
Use the levels-of-explanation ladder as your essay structure. It organises the whole argument for you.
Name a real practical application. “Reductionist research led to SSRIs” beats an abstract claim about science.
Define parsimony if you can: choosing the simplest theory that fits the data. It is the intellectual case for reductionism.
Kuhn’s “pre-science” is a rare, high-value reference. One sentence is enough.
Do not end with “so reductionism is bad”. End with when it is appropriate and when it is not.
⚠ Common mix-up
Treating reductionism as automatically wrong. It is how most productive science is done.
Confusing holism with “considering two factors”. Holism means biological, psychological and social together.
Putting holism at the lowest level. Biological is the lowest, holism the highest.
Saying drugs do not work. The criticism is that they work on symptoms without addressing causes.
Mixing up paradigm and paradigm shift. One is the current set of assumptions, the other is the moment they get replaced.
Forgetting environmental reductionism. Behaviourism is just as reductionist as biology, only in the other direction.
