Cutting Water Pollution at Source (HL)

This is the level 1 page: stopping pollution before it is made. It is also the section where ESS asks what you can do — and where the honest answer is that individual habits matter, but organised action matters more.

None of these replaces the others. Individual habits build the public support that makes campaigning credible, and campaigning is what turns habits into law.

What individuals can do

Use less water

Every litre you do not use is a litre that does not need treating. Shorter showers, turning the tap off while brushing your teeth and water-efficient appliances all cut the volume of wastewater generated, which keeps treatment works within capacity and keeps water sources cleaner.

Dispose of waste properly

Chemicals, oils, paints and medicines poured down a sink or drain end up in local water sources and groundwater. Hazardous household waste belongs at a designated recycling or waste facility. This is one of the highest-impact individual actions there is, because these substances are harmful at very low concentrations.

Choose gentler products

Be careful with the phrase “eco-friendly”. In an exam, explain the mechanism: the product breaks down quickly, so it does not persist in water or accumulate in organisms. That is the science behind the label.

What groups and citizen activists can do

🧩 Four routes for collective action

  1. Peaceful protest. Draws public attention to a pollution issue and pressures companies or governments to act. It makes both policymakers and the public aware of risks, and can lead to stricter regulation or new laws.
  2. Community clean-ups. Directly remove litter and plastics from rivers, lakes and beaches, and educate participants about keeping water sources free of waste.
  3. Citizen science. Local residents monitor water quality themselves, measuring pH, turbidity and pollutant levels. The data reveals trends and helps pinpoint sources.
  4. Reporting pollution. Individuals and groups alert authorities to visible pollution or sudden changes, so it can be contained and treated before it spreads.
Why citizen science punches above its weight: official monitoring networks are thin and expensive. Volunteers can sample far more sites, far more often. The data is less precise but the coverage is much better — and it is often what triggers an official investigation.

Legal teams and lobbying

The important thing about this route is scale. One lawsuit or one new regulation changes the behaviour of an entire industry at once, which no amount of individual effort can match.

Agree: the limits of individual action Households are a small share of total pollution compared with agriculture and industry. Individuals cannot regulate a factory discharge, and choices depend on income and on what is available locally. Disagree: what individuals do achieve Millions of small changes add up; consumer demand shifts what companies make; and proper disposal of household chemicals prevents highly toxic inputs at source.
