An ethical framework is a structure of thought people use to decide what is right. In environmental questions they all trace back to one disagreement: how different are humans from the rest of nature? Answer that, and your position on rainforests, dams and deforestation follows almost automatically.

Ethical frameworks are structures of thought that guide moral decisions.
Environmental frameworks differ because people hold different beliefs about the relationship between humans and nature.
Ecocentrism: humans are part of nature, not above it. All components of nature have intrinsic value and equal rights.
Stewardship: humans are part of nature but carry a special responsibility to care for it.
Anthropocentrism: nature is separate from humans and exists to serve human needs.
Technocentrism: technology and human innovation should drive progress and solve environmental problems.
These form a spectrum, not four separate boxes, and most people sit somewhere between them.
The spectrum
Rather than four rival camps, think of a line. At one end nature is central and humans are one part of it. At the other, humans and their technology are central and nature is a resource. Everything else sits in between.
Stewardship sits between the two ends and borrows from both: humans belong to nature, as ecocentrists say, but have a distinctive role, as anthropocentrists say.
Ecocentrism
If you believe the human species is not significantly different from the rest of nature, you are moving towards an ecocentric position. Its central belief is that humans are not fundamentally different from nature — we are a part of it, not above it.
Ecocentrists hold that all components of nature have intrinsic value and equal rights, and that ethical judgements should be based on that equality rather than on human interest. In practice this leads to:
complete protection of ecosystems and habitats such as rainforests and coral reefs;
national parks and reserves established primarily to protect biodiversity, not to provide recreation;
self-imposed restraint on resource use, and admiration for smaller, less materialistic, more self-sufficient societies;
emphasis on environmental education and on biorights — the idea that species and ecosystems hold rights of their own;
integration of social, spiritual and environmental thinking rather than treating them separately.
Stewardship
The central belief of environmental stewardship is that humans are part of nature but have a special responsibility to look after it. It accepts that we are distinctive without concluding that we are entitled.
This produces judgements favouring compassionate, respectful treatment of nature alongside responsible management: we may use natural resources, but we must maintain them. Many Indigenous communities practise stewardship through sustainable resource use built up over generations, and everyday recycling and conservation schemes reflect the same idea at a smaller scale.
Stewardship is often the most useful position to write about, because it is where most real environmental policy actually sits. Governments rarely argue that a forest has rights, and rarely argue it should be cleared without limit. They argue about how to use it responsibly — which is stewardship.
Anthropocentrism and technocentrism
If you believe nature is separate from humans and exists to serve human needs, you are moving towards the anthropocentric or technocentric end.
Anthropocentrism
The central belief is that nature exists to serve human needs: we are above nature, and the aim is to maximise human development and well-being. This does not automatically mean carelessness. Anthropocentrists often argue strongly for sustainable management through taxes, legislation and environmental regulation, and for wide participation in environmental decision-making — because a degraded environment is bad for people. Biodiversity is protected where it can be shown to bring economic and ecological advantages.
Technocentrism
The central belief is that technology and human innovation should be the primary drivers of progress. Technological solutions are prioritised over ecological preservation or concerns about the human-nature relationship. Technocentrists argue that scientific research and prediction should inform policy, that we need to understand natural systems so we can control them, and that economic growth can be sustained through innovation.
At their extreme, both worldviews focus on maximising benefits for humans without considering other species. Large-scale deforestation for agriculture is the standard example: human economic gain is prioritised over biodiverse ecosystems, and the resulting industrial agriculture then degrades the soil and reduces biodiversity further.

The bottom row names the deciding idea in each column. If you can identify that idea in a piece of writing, you can name the framework behind it.
WORKED EXAMPLE
Identify the ethical framework behind each statement: (a) “We should protect the reef because dive tourism earns the region millions.” (b) “The reef has existed for 8 000 years and has a right to continue.” (c) “Coral can be re-grown in nurseries and transplanted.” (d) “We depend on the reef, so we must manage fishing carefully and leave it healthy for those after us.”
(a) Tourism incomeAnthropocentric. The reef is valued for what it earns people; the justification is entirely human benefit.
(b) A right to continueEcocentric. Value is placed in the reef itself, independent of use, and rights are extended to a non-human entity.

Ask what each speaker treats as the reason the reef mattersStatements (a) and (d) both mention human benefit. What separates them is the sense of duty in (d).
WORKED EXAMPLE
A large hydroelectric dam is proposed. It would provide low-carbon electricity for two million people, flood a valley containing rare habitat, and displace 4 000 residents. Discuss how an ecocentric and a technocentric perspective would evaluate this proposal.
Step 1: the technocentric view
A technological solution to a real problem. Low-carbon power replaces fossil fuels, engineering makes it possible, and losses are treated as
costs that can be compensated or offset — residents rehoused, habitat recreated elsewhere.
Step 2: the ecocentric view
The valley ecosystem has intrinsic value and is not replaceable. The river itself may be held to have moral standing, and the disruption to downstream communities of organisms counts independently of any effect on people.
Step 3: where they genuinely clash
Not on the facts, but on substitutability: whether a recreated habitat is the same thing as the one destroyed.
Step 4: a stewardship middle position
Build, but at reduced scale, with fish passes, guaranteed downstream flows, genuine consent and compensation for the 4 000 residents.
The disagreement is about replacement, not about electricityNaming the exact point of disagreement is what turns a description of two views into a discussion.
Most people are inconsistent, and that is fine to say. Someone may hold an ecocentric view about whales and a technocentric one about farmland. Frameworks describe positions, not personalities, and pointing out that real people move along the spectrum depending on the issue is a mature evaluative comment.
💡 Exam tip
Learn the central belief of each framework in one sentence. That single line answers most short questions.
Present the frameworks as a spectrum, and say so explicitly.
Do not caricature anthropocentrism as “not caring”. It often supports strong regulation, for human reasons.
Use stewardship as your middle position when a question asks for a compromise.
For “discuss” questions, give at least two frameworks and identify the precise point where they disagree.
Link back to intrinsic and instrumental value. Ecocentrism rests on intrinsic value; the other end rests on instrumental value.
⚠ Common mix-ups
Treating the four as separate boxes. They are points on a continuum.
Confusing anthropocentrism with technocentrism. Both are human-centred, but technocentrism adds the belief that technology can solve the problems.
Assuming ecocentrism means opposing all human activity. It argues for restraint and minimal disturbance, not for absence.
Calling stewardship the same as ecocentrism. Stewardship keeps a special human role; ecocentrism denies one.
Labelling any pro-environment statement ecocentric. Check the reason given — if it is human benefit, it is anthropocentric.
Forgetting that frameworks predict policy. Each leads to different, identifiable decisions.
