Identifying Key Biodiversity Areas

A hotspot only qualifies once 70% of it has been destroyed. Key biodiversity areas take the opposite approach: five scientific criteria that can flag a place while it is still intact — which is why Canada’s boreal forest counts precisely because nothing has happened to it.

What KBAs are

Key biodiversity areas (KBAs) are places identified as globally important for the conservation of biodiversity. They are crucial for the survival of species and ecosystems, particularly those at risk of extinction or collapse, and are often prioritised for conservation because of their significant role in maintaining global biodiversity. The concept helps guide policymakers, scientists and conservationists towards the most critical areas.

The five criteria

Five criteria for a key biodiversity area Meeting any one of these can qualify an area 1 THREATENED SPECIES holds species listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the Red List 2 THREATENED ECOSYSTEMS contains habitats at risk of collapse: the system may stop functioning if not protected 3 RESTRICTED-RANGE SPECIES contains species with a limited geographical range, such as Madagascar’s lemurs 4 POPULATIONS AND PROCESSES crucial during breeding, migration or feeding, such as the East African Rift Valley 5 ECOLOGICAL INTEGRITY remains intact and largely unaffected by industrial human influence
Criterion 5 is the interesting one: an area can qualify because it is undisturbed, not because it is damaged. That is the key contrast with hotspots.

The three-way conflict

Many KBAs are rich in exactly the resources industry wants, which is why resource extraction so often degrades or destroys critical habitat.

Case study: palm oil in Malaysia and Indonesia

Palm oil is one of the most widely used vegetable oils in the world, found in many food and cosmetic products, and demand has driven rapid expansion of plantations in tropical countries.

Notice how this page connects to 3.1. The Sumatran orangutan appeared there as a critically endangered species; here you can see the economic machinery driving its decline. If a question gives you a conservation conflict, the strongest answers name the industry, the species and the attempted solution — and then say honestly why that solution is incomplete. The RSPO exists, and illegal deforestation continues anyway.

Conflict in a KBA

Discuss the conflict between exploitation and conservation in key biodiversity areas, using a named example. (4 marks)

Step 1: why the conflict exists Many KBAs are rich in natural resources, making them targets for industries such as agriculture, mining and logging, which leads to habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. Step 2: the example Palm oil plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia expand into KBAs such as the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, home to critically endangered species including the Sumatran orangutan and Bornean pygmy elephant. Step 3: the wider consequence Expansion also contributes to climate change by releasing carbon stored in trees and soil. Step 4: attempted resolution and its limits The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil has set standards to reduce deforestation, but demand remains high and illegal deforestation continues, so full protection remains very difficult. A voluntary standard cannot outweigh continuing global demand acknowledging why the solution falls short is what earns the discussion marks
