Population Structure and Models

A single population total tells you almost nothing. Two countries can both have 40 million people, and one is full of children while the other is full of pensioners. Their futures are completely different. This page is about reading that structure — from a pyramid on the page, and from the model that explains how a country moves between shapes.

Reading an age-sex pyramid

An age-sex pyramid is just two horizontal bar charts back to back. Age groups run up the vertical axis, usually in five-year bands. The number or percentage of people runs along the horizontal axis: males to the left of the centre line, females to the right.

You do not need to study every bar. Three quick looks give you almost everything.

🧩 Reading a pyramid in ten seconds

  1. The base. Wide base means a high birth rate and lots of young dependents. Narrow base means a low birth rate.
  2. The top. A broad top means high life expectancy and many elderly dependents. A top that vanishes quickly means low life expectancy.
  3. The middle. A fat middle means a large working-age population supporting everyone else.
  4. Left against right. A big difference between the sexes at one age suggests war, labour migration, or a strong preference for sons.
  5. Odd bumps. A sudden narrow band is a historic drop in births or a spike in deaths. A bulge is a baby boom or an inflow of migrant workers.
The three pyramid shapes you must recognise Males on the left, females on the right, youngest at the bottom. EXPANSIVE wide base, narrow top e.g. Niger male female high birth rate STATIONARY sides almost straight e.g. United Kingdom male female births about equal deaths CONTRACTING narrow base, wide middle e.g. Japan male female low birth rate age rises up the diagram Look at the base first. It tells you the birth rate straight away. Then look at the top for life expectancy, and the middle for the workforce.
The same country moves left to right across these shapes as it develops. Nothing about the shape is fixed — today’s expansive pyramid is tomorrow’s contracting one.

What each shape means

Beware the middle case. Many countries such as Nepal now sit between expansive and stationary: still a fairly wide base, but each band is only slightly bigger than the one above it. That is a country partway through its transition, and saying so scores better than forcing it into one of the three neat labels.
Why pyramids matter beyond the exam. Governments use them to plan. A wide base means schools and maternity care are needed in the next ten years. A broad top means pensions, hospitals and social care. Getting this wrong means building the wrong things a decade too late.
WORKED EXAMPLE

A country’s pyramid has a narrow base, its widest bands at ages 45 to 59, and a broad top reaching past 85. Describe what this shows about the country’s population structure and its likely future.

Step 1: base Narrow base means a low birth rate, so few young dependents and a small generation entering school. Step 2: top A broad top past 85 means high life expectancy, so good healthcare, diet and living conditions. Step 3: middle The widest bands are 45 to 59, so the workforce is large now but is close to retirement. Step 4: the future In roughly 10 to 20 years that big group moves past 65, while the small base replaces it. A contracting population with a rising elderly dependency burden Notice that step 4 is where the marks are. Describing the shape is easy; saying what happens next is the skill.

The demographic transition model

The DTM is a general picture of how birth rates, death rates and total population change as a country develops. It was built from the history of industrialised countries in Europe, and it has five stages.

The key idea is a lag. Death rates fall as soon as food, water and medicine improve, because nobody refuses clean water. Birth rates fall much later, because family size depends on beliefs, expectations and economics, and those take a generation to shift. While death rates have fallen and birth rates have not, the population grows fast. That gap is the whole model.

The demographic transition model The gap between the two rate lines is what makes the population grow. STAGE 1 STAGE 2 STAGE 3 STAGE 4 STAGE 5 high low time and development birth rate death rate total population Death rate falls first. Birth rate follows one stage later. That lag is the whole model.
Read the shaded gap between the red and green lines as the natural increase rate. It is widest in stage 2 and early stage 3, which is exactly when the purple population line is steepest.

A neat trick for stage 5: the death rate creeps back up not because healthcare has got worse, but because so many people are old. An old population has more deaths per 1 000, however good its hospitals are.

Where the model breaks down

Examiners like a candidate who can criticise a model. The DTM has real weaknesses.

WORKED EXAMPLE

A country has a crude birth rate of 34 per 1 000, a crude death rate of 11 per 1 000 that has halved in thirty years, and a rapidly growing population. Identify its DTM stage and justify your answer.

Step 1: compare the two rates CBR 34 is high; CDR 11 is now low and has been falling fast. Step 2: what that combination means A high birth rate with a sharply falling death rate leaves a wide gap, so natural increase is large. NIR = (34 − 11) ÷ 10 = 2.3% per year Step 3: match to a stage Falling deaths but births not yet falling is the signature of stage 2, moving towards stage 3. Stage 2, early expanding Calculating the NIR was not asked for, but it proves the growth is rapid. Free evidence like this strengthens a justification.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Explain why a population can keep growing during stage 4, even though birth and death rates are both low and roughly equal.

Step 1: rates are not numbers of people A low CBR applied to a much larger population still produces a lot of babies. Step 2: the age structure is still young Large groups born in stages 2 and 3 are now of reproductive age, so there are many potential parents even if each has few children. Step 3: name it This is population momentum. Growth continues for decades after fertility falls Momentum comes up again in the HL pages. Getting the idea straight here makes those much easier.
