Protecting and Restoring Soil

Soil takes centuries to build and a single wet season to lose. Every conservation technique in this topic does one of three jobs: it slows water down, it holds soil in place, or it puts fertility back. Once you see which job a technique is doing, you can explain any of them without memorising a list.

What goes wrong with soil

Soil conservation exists because soil can be lost or spoiled in several different ways. Learn these four by their cause, not just their name.

These do not stay on the farm. Lost topsoil silts up rivers, salinised land is abandoned, and desertified land pushes people to move. That is the environmental and social double impact examiners look for.

Group 1: techniques that reduce erosion

Water erosion depends on how fast water flows and how far it travels before it soaks in. Every water technique below attacks one of those two things.

Windbreaks do three jobs at once: cut wind erosion, protect the topsoil, and shield crops from physical damage. Mention all three if a question asks for their value.

Group 2: soil conditioners that restore fertility

Erosion control keeps the soil where it is. Conditioners deal with the other half of the problem: the soil that is still there but no longer healthy.

Watch how cover crops appear in both lists. They shield soil from erosion while they grow, and become green manure when they are ploughed in. That double role is exactly the kind of link examiners reward.

Group 3: cultivation techniques

The third group is about farming differently rather than adding anything. Most of these are free — they are decisions, not purchases.

Marginal land is the trap in disguise. It looks like spare land, and in a food crisis it is tempting to farm it. But steep, low-fertility land erodes almost immediately once the natural vegetation is stripped, so the short-term gain is followed by permanent loss.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Explain how terracing reduces soil erosion on a steep hillside. [3]

Give the mechanism, then the consequence 1. Terracing cuts the slope into a series of level steps. 2. Water therefore moves slowly across each flat step instead of running fast down a long slope. 3. Slower water has less energy to lift and carry soil particles, and more of it infiltrates. Less runoff means less topsoil is removed, so soil loss on steep slopes is minimised Never write “terracing stops erosion” and leave it there. The middle step, slowing the water, is the mark.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Outline two ways in which salinisation can be reduced in an irrigated arid region. [4]

Start from the cause: salts left behind when irrigation water evaporates 1. Improve drainage so surplus water carries salts away below the root zone instead of leaving them at the surface. 2. Irrigate more carefully, applying less water more often and delivering it near the roots, so less evaporates from open ground. Both reduce the amount of salt left in the topsoil each season Adding organic matter and keeping the ground covered also cut evaporation, which is a useful third point.
