Soil takes centuries to build and a single wet season to lose. Every conservation technique in this topic does one of three jobs: it slows water down, it holds soil in place, or it puts fertility back. Once you see which job a technique is doing, you can explain any of them without memorising a list.

Soil conservation techniques fall into three groups: reducing erosion, adding soil conditioners, and changing cultivation practice.
Water erosion is reduced by slowing runoff — terracing, contour ploughing, strip cultivation, bunding, cover crops.
Wind erosion is reduced by physical barriers — windbreaks and hedgerows.
Soil conditioners such as lime, compost and green manure restore chemical and biological quality.
Marginal land (steep, thin, infertile) should be left alone, because farming it degrades it quickly.
Most techniques do more than one job at once — say so in your answers.
What goes wrong with soil
Soil conservation exists because soil can be lost or spoiled in several different ways. Learn these four by their cause, not just their name.
Soil erosion — wind or water physically carries the topsoil away. Topsoil is the fertile layer, so once it goes, so does productivity.
Toxification — harmful substances such as pesticide residues or heavy metals build up until the soil is unhealthy for crops and soil organisms.
Salinisation — irrigation water evaporates and leaves its dissolved salts behind. Over years the salt concentration rises until most crops cannot grow.
Desertification — the end point in dry regions, where degraded land loses its vegetation and turns to desert-like conditions.
These do not stay on the farm. Lost topsoil silts up rivers, salinised land is abandoned, and desertified land pushes people to move. That is the environmental and social double impact examiners look for.

Group 1: techniques that reduce erosion
Water erosion depends on how fast water flows and how far it travels before it soaks in. Every water technique below attacks one of those two things.
Terracing works the same way but goes further, cutting the slope into level steps so there is barely any downhill flow at all.

Windbreaks do three jobs at once: cut wind erosion, protect the topsoil, and shield crops from physical damage. Mention all three if a question asks for their value.
Group 2: soil conditioners that restore fertility
Erosion control keeps the soil where it is. Conditioners deal with the other half of the problem: the soil that is still there but no longer healthy.

Watch how cover crops appear in both lists. They shield soil from erosion while they grow, and become green manure when they are ploughed in. That double role is exactly the kind of link examiners reward.
Group 3: cultivation techniques
The third group is about farming differently rather than adding anything. Most of these are free — they are decisions, not purchases.

Marginal land is the trap in disguise. It looks like spare land, and in a food crisis it is tempting to farm it. But steep, low-fertility land erodes almost immediately once the natural vegetation is stripped, so the short-term gain is followed by permanent loss.

💡 Exam tip
Sort every technique into slows water, blocks wind, or restores fertility. It makes the whole topic memorable.
If a question gives you a wind problem, do not answer with contour ploughing. Match the technique to the type of erosion named.
Many techniques serve more than one purpose — saying so is a real evaluation point, not padding.
Use the word infiltration. It is the technical term for water soaking in and it signals precision.
For any “explain” question, write the chain: technique → what it changes → why that reduces soil loss.
Know why marginal land should be left alone — it is a favourite short-answer question.
⚠️ Common mix-up
Mixing up salinisation (salt build-up from evaporating irrigation water) with toxification (build-up of harmful chemicals).
Thinking desertification means deserts spreading outwards. It means land degrading into desert-like conditions, usually because of how it is used.
Saying terracing and contour ploughing are the same. Terracing rebuilds the slope into steps; contour ploughing just changes furrow direction.
Believing more drainage is always better. Over-draining dries the soil and can wash nutrients out.
Forgetting compaction. Heavy machinery damages soil without removing any of it.
Listing techniques with no mechanism. A list of names rarely gets more than one mark.
