What Energy Security Means

Energy security is where environmental science meets politics. A country can be sitting on enormous coal reserves and still have poor energy security. Understanding why is the difference between a decent answer and a strong one.

What energy security actually is

Definition Energy security = the uninterrupted availability of energy at affordable prices

Two words do the heavy lifting there. Uninterrupted means the supply does not stop, whatever the weather or the politics. Affordable means people and businesses can actually pay for it. A country with a supply that keeps working but costs ten times as much is not energy secure.

Break it into the three things a secure supply has to offer:

Why energy security matters

Economic stability

Industries and businesses need power without interruption. A factory that shuts down every time the grid struggles cannot compete. Secure supply also reduces vulnerability to energy price shocks — sudden jumps in the price of oil or gas that push up the cost of everything else.

National security

Depending on energy imports means depending on other countries. If relations break down, or a pipeline is closed, or a shipping route is blocked, the supply can be cut off. That makes energy a national security issue, not just an economic one.

Social well-being

Affordable, reliable energy sits underneath heating, healthcare and transport. When energy becomes unaffordable, the people hit hardest are the ones who can least afford it, and essential services suffer first.

🤔 Why a resource-rich country can still be energy insecure

Imagine a country with enormous coal reserves under the ground. Availability: excellent. But if it has no working mines, no money to build power stations, no grid to carry the electricity and no stable supply chain to move the coal, then the energy never reaches anyone. The resource is present and the security is still poor. That is why availability and security are two separate ideas, and why examiners like this example.

How countries improve energy security

1. Diversification of energy sources

Using a mix of sources means no single failure can take the whole system down. A country might add renewables such as wind and solar, and nuclear for reliable low-carbon power, alongside whatever it already had.

It stops them being fatal. This is the reason many countries keep nuclear in the mix despite its drawbacks.

2. Reducing energy imports

Over-reliance on foreign energy leaves a country exposed to supply interruptions. The classic case is the 1973 oil crisis, when supply cuts by OPEC caused economic disruption worldwide. Two methods reduce that exposure:

Efficiency reduces consumption through better technology and practices, which lowers energy bills and takes pressure off supply. LED lighting and improved building insulation cut demand in homes and offices. The energy you never needed is the most secure energy there is.

A neat framing for essays: diversification spreads the risk, reducing imports moves the risk inside your own borders, and efficiency shrinks the risk altogether. Three different strategies, one goal.

Availability What energy resources are physically present in a country, such as coal reserves, strong winds or high sunshine levels. Security Whether the country can actually deliver energy reliably and affordably, which also depends on infrastructure, funding and stable supply chains. The link A country can have abundant resources (high availability) and still have poor energy security if it cannot get that energy to users. 2 marks: define each, contrast clearly The third line is what turns a safe 2 into a confident 2. Show the two are not the same.

Explain two ways a country can improve its energy security. [4]

Way 1 — diversification Using a mix of sources such as wind, solar and nuclear alongside existing supply. Why it works: if one source fails or is cut off, the others keep generating, so no single disruption can shut the country down. Way 2 — reducing imports Increasing domestic production, for example UK North Sea oil and gas, or building renewable infrastructure at home. Why it works: domestic energy is not exposed to foreign price swings or geopolitical disputes, as the 1973 OPEC oil crisis showed. 4 marks: two methods, each with a reason it improves security
