When Renewable Resources Run Out

Whales are renewable. So are cod, and so are rainforests. All three have been driven to collapse. The label on a resource tells you what it could do; how we extract, transport, process and consume it decides what actually happens. This is the page where renewable and sustainable come apart.

The bottom-left box is the one that catches students out. Overfishing and deforestation are failures of management, not failures of renewability.

Impact happens along the whole chain

It is tempting to judge sustainability by the harvest alone. But three activities carry impact, and any of them can make an otherwise renewable resource unsustainable.

This is a useful evaluation move. If a question calls something sustainable, ask which of the three stages that claim actually covers.

Four examples of unsustainable extraction

Hydropower is the interesting one. It is renewable energy and it is often held up as a climate solution, yet a large dam can be ecologically and socially devastating. Using it as an example shows you can hold two ideas at once.

Excessive consumption

Excessive consumption means using resources faster than they can regenerate, which leads directly to environmental degradation and resource depletion. The underlying driver is economic: industries and economies chase short-term gains, focusing on high production and consumption without weighing long-term sustainability.

Case study: whaling

Whaling shows the full arc of excessive consumption, from boom to collapse to partial recovery.

The economic reversal is the lesson. Whales were worth more dead than alive until they nearly ran out. Whale-watching turned the same animals into a renewable income stream that only works if the population survives — the same logic as Brazil nut harvesting protecting rainforest.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Using an example, explain how a renewable resource can be used unsustainably. [4]

State the principle, then apply it to one named case A resource is used unsustainably when the rate of extraction exceeds the rate at which the population or stock can regenerate. North Atlantic cod are renewable, but fishing removed them far faster than they could reproduce. Destructive methods such as trawling damaged the habitat itself, and bycatch disrupted the wider food web, slowing recovery further. The fishery collapsed in the 1990s despite cod being a renewable resource Adding that the extraction method, not just the quantity, was part of the problem lifts the answer.
WORKED EXAMPLE

Discuss the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of excessive consumption, using whaling as an example. [6]

Environmental Overhunting caused dramatic population collapse in blue, humpback and sperm whales. Because whale faeces fertilise surface waters and promote phytoplankton growth that absorbs carbon dioxide, the decline also disrupted nutrient cycling and food chains. Socioeconomic Whaling communities in countries such as Japan and Norway faced economic hardship once populations were too depleted to sustain hunting — the industry destroyed its own resource base. Response and judgement The 1986 IWC moratorium banned commercial whaling, and ecotourism now offers an alternative income, though loopholes and new pressures such as pollution persist. Excessive consumption damaged both the ecosystem and the economy that depended on it The phrase “destroyed its own resource base” is the key insight; it works for fisheries and forests too.
