Whales are renewable. So are cod, and so are rainforests. All three have been driven to collapse. The label on a resource tells you what it could do; how we extract, transport, process and consume it decides what actually happens. This is the page where renewable and sustainable come apart.

Renewable is not the same as sustainable
The bottom-left box is the one that catches students out. Overfishing and deforestation are failures of management, not failures of renewability.
Impact happens along the whole chain
It is tempting to judge sustainability by the harvest alone. But three activities carry impact, and any of them can make an otherwise renewable resource unsustainable.
This is a useful evaluation move. If a question calls something sustainable, ask which of the three stages that claim actually covers.

The Three Gorges Dam in China displaced over a million people and caused widespread habitat loss
Hydropower is the interesting one. It is renewable energy and it is often held up as a climate solution, yet a large dam can be ecologically and socially devastating. Using it as an example shows you can hold two ideas at once.
Excessive consumption
Excessive consumption means using resources faster than they can regenerate, which leads directly to environmental degradation and resource depletion. The underlying driver is economic: industries and economies chase short-term gains, focusing on high production and consumption without weighing long-term sustainability.

What drives it
Short-term economic gain. Industries prioritise immediate profit over sustainability. Fast fashion is the clearest case: cheap, disposable clothing generating waste and overusing resources.
Advertising and consumer culture. Media and marketing promote consumption as a lifestyle. Campaigns for new smartphones and seasonal trends push resource-intensive production cycles.

Whaling shows the full arc of excessive consumption, from boom to collapse to partial recovery.

Industrial-scale whaling began in the 19th century, driven by demand for whale oil used in lighting, lubrication and soap. Blue whales, humpbacks and sperm whales were hunted towards extinction. By the mid-20th century, better ships and harpoons allowed unsustainable levels of hunting

Populations collapsed. Whales matter ecologically: their faeces fertilise ocean waters, promoting phytoplankton growth that absorbs carbon dioxide. Their decline disrupted food chains and affected other marine species
Socioeconomic impacts
Whaling economies collapsed too. Communities reliant on whaling, in countries such as Japan and Norway, faced economic difficulty once populations were too depleted to hunt
Global response
The 1986 moratorium by the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling, though loopholes for scientific research and cultural hunting are still used
Current challenges
Some countries continue whaling under controversial exemptions. Climate change, ocean pollution, ship collisions and entanglement in fishing gear now threaten recovery
Sustainable solutions
Whale-watching ecotourism in places such as Australia and Canada offers an economic alternative; the IWC and NGOs such as Greenpeace monitor and campaign; marine conservation zones allow populations to recover
The economic reversal is the lesson. Whales were worth more dead than alive until they nearly ran out. Whale-watching turned the same animals into a renewable income stream that only works if the population survives — the same logic as Brazil nut harvesting protecting rainforest.

💡 Exam tip
State clearly that renewable does not mean sustainable. It is explicitly flagged in the syllabus.
Judge the full chain: extraction, transport and processing.
Have one example from each category ready: timber, fish, mineral, and energy infrastructure.
For whaling, know the 1986 IWC moratorium and the ecological role of whales in nutrient cycling.
Name the economic drivers — short-term profit and advertising — rather than blaming consumers vaguely.
Use ecotourism as the constructive ending. It shows conservation and economics can align.
⚠️ Common mix-up
Assuming renewable energy is automatically low impact. Large dams displace people and block rivers.
Blaming only the quantity harvested. Method matters too — trawling and clear-cutting damage the system itself.
Forgetting the socioeconomic side of collapse. Industries destroy their own livelihoods.
Saying whaling is fully banned. The moratorium has exemptions still in use.
Treating excessive consumption as individual greed. Advertising and profit structures drive it.
Ignoring transport and processing when judging whether a supply chain is sustainable.
