Flint was once the most valuable rock a person could own. Today you would walk past it without looking. Uranium was worthless for the whole of human history until the 1940s. Nothing about the rocks changed — we did. Value is not a property of a resource; it is something a society gives it.

Natural capital provides goods and services that have value to societies.
That value can be aesthetic, cultural, economic, environmental, health, intrinsic, social, spiritual or technological.
Intrinsic value means worth in itself, separate from any use to humans.
The value of natural capital is dynamic: it changes over time and from place to place.
Six things shift it: cultural, social, economic, environmental, technological and political factors.
The same resource can be seen as valuable in one region and as a threat in another.
Some values are easy to price and some are almost impossible, which makes decision making difficult.
The many kinds of value
When ESS says a resource is “valuable”, it does not only mean expensive. A mountain, a coral reef or an old woodland can matter to people for several reasons at once, and you are expected to be able to name them.
If a question asks you to outline the value of an ecosystem, this grid is your answer plan. Pick three or four and give a reason for each.

Intrinsic value is the one examiners watch for. It is the only value on the list that is not about us. If a question mentions ecocentrism, or asks whether nature should be priced at all, intrinsic value is the idea you build the answer around.
Value is dynamic
Here is the part that trips people up. Natural capital is not a fixed list with fixed prices. The same substance can be treasure in one decade and rubbish in the next, or precious in one country and unwanted in the country next door.
Two resources, opposite journeys, same cause: technology changed what people could do with them.

Remember the six with CSEETP
Cultural, Social, Economic, Environmental, Technological, Political. In an exam, run down the list and pick the two or three that fit the resource in front of you.
Value changes across space as well as time. A deposit of lithium in the Andes is enormously valuable to a battery manufacturer, worth much less to a farmer who needs that water and land, and can be a direct threat to a community that loses its water supply to the mine. Same rock, three different values — and all three are real.
Why putting a number on nature is so hard
If natural capital is going to be used in real decisions, someone has to compare it with money. That works better for some values than others.

Timber, fish and crops, because they are already sold in markets
The beauty of a landscape, which different people rate completely differently
Flood protection, by costing the concrete wall you would need instead
Spiritual meaning, which many communities would say is not for sale at any price
Tourism income, from visitor spending and jobs
Intrinsic value, which by definition is not about usefulness to humans at all
This matters, because in a system that only counts what can be counted, the things without a price tag are the first to be sacrificed. That is the strongest criticism of the natural capital idea, and it is a good line to bring into an evaluation.
A neat two-sided conclusion: pricing nature makes it visible in decisions that were previously made on money alone, but any price we choose is an underestimate, because it can never include the values people refuse to trade.

Strength 1
It makes ecosystem services visible in decisions that would otherwise only count profit, so wetlands and forests can be compared with the developments that would replace them.
Strength 2
It encourages investment in conservation, because a healthy ecosystem becomes an asset worth protecting.
Limitation 1Aesthetic, spiritual and intrinsic values cannot be priced, so any figure understates the true value.
Limitation 2
It is anthropocentric, and an ecocentric view would argue nature has worth independent of human use.

💡 Exam tips
Learn the nine value types. You will rarely need all of them, but you need three or four fast.
Always pair a value type with a reason: “aesthetic, because…” not just “aesthetic”.
Keep one rising example and one falling example ready for dynamic value questions.
Use the word dynamic itself — examiners look for it.
Remember value varies by place as well as time; the mine that enriches a company may impoverish a village.
Link the debate to environmental value systems: technocentric thinkers price nature, ecocentric thinkers resist it.
⚠ Common mix-ups
Thinking “value” always means money. Economic value is one of nine types on the list.
Confusing intrinsic and aesthetic value. Aesthetic value is about our enjoyment; intrinsic value exists whether or not anyone is there to enjoy it.
Saying value changes because the resource changes. The rock is identical — technology, demand and attitudes are what move.
Giving only one example when the question asks for two. Read the command term.
Forgetting that value can be negative. Where uranium is seen as a danger, it is treated as harmful natural capital.
Answering “evaluate” with only strengths. Both sides and a judgement, every time.
