Urban Sprawl and Expansion
When a city runs out of room, it spreads. Fields become housing estates, streams get piped underground and the edge of the city creeps further out every year. This page is about why that happens and what it costs the environment.

Suburbanisation is people moving from the dense centre of a city to the less dense areas around the edge.
Urban sprawl is the uncontrolled spread of the built-up area into surrounding rural land.
Causes include the desire for space, better transport links, perceived quality of life, rising city costs and congestion.
Sprawl brings longer commutes, greater car dependency and more demand for roads and services.
Expansion causes loss of farmland, deforestation and loss of wetlands.
It also causes water pollution and altered river flows, which can lead to flooding or drought.
More traffic and industry means more air pollution, and hard surfaces create urban heat islands.
Habitat destruction reduces biodiversity and puts species at risk of extinction.
Suburbanisation and sprawl
Suburbanisation is the process where people move from the dense central parts of cities to the less dense, peripheral areas we call suburbs. Cities expand into nearby rural or undeveloped land, and what gets built there is lower-density housing. People go looking for larger homes, green space and better living conditions away from a congested centre.
Urban sprawl is what happens when that expansion is uncontrolled. The built-up area spreads outwards into rural land, creating scattered, spread-out development with no clear edge to the city.

The two are closely linked. Lower-density housing and commercial development need more land per person, so the boundaries of the city stretch. The result is longer commutes, greater car dependency, and rising demand for infrastructure such as roads, drains and schools.
The same number of people takes up far more land in the suburbs than in the centre. That extra land has to come from somewhere.
Causes of suburbanisation

Congestion and overcrowding
City centres are busy and clogged with traffic, which makes living and commuting in the core unpleasant
Notice that four of those five causes are about choice, and only one is about cost. That matters when you evaluate solutions later: you cannot fix sprawl by building roads, because better roads make the suburbs even more attractive.
Environmental impacts of urban expansion
Every hectare a city gains was something else before. Here is the damage, grouped the way an exam question is likely to ask for it.
Loss of land and ecosystems
Loss of farmland. As cities expand they take over land previously used for agriculture, reducing the area available for growing food. In Beijing, China, rapid urbanisation has swallowed large areas of farmland, raising concerns about food security.
Deforestation. Forests are cleared to make way for housing, roads and businesses. This destroys habitat and reduces biodiversity. The growth of Sao Paulo in Brazil has destroyed parts of the Amazon rainforest.
Loss of wetlands. Expanding urban areas fill in wetlands, rivers and lakes. In Florida, USA, urban sprawl has reduced the size of the Everglades, an important wetland ecosystem.
Water quality and river flows
Water pollution. Construction and industry near cities pollute rivers, lakes and groundwater. Chemicals from factories, waste from homes and run-off from roads all contaminate water supplies. The Ganges River in India suffers severe pollution from urban growth and industrial waste from several major cities.
Altered river flows. Expanding cities build dams, divert rivers and drain wetlands, which changes the natural flow of water and can cause flooding in one place and drought in another. Rapid growth in Las Vegas, USA, has strained the Colorado River and led to water shortages.
Why sprawl floods. Soil soaks up rain. Concrete and tarmac do not. When you replace fields with roads and roofs, rainwater runs straight into drains and rivers instead of soaking in, so the river rises faster and higher after a storm.
Air pollution and heat
Traffic and industry. As cities grow they generate more air pollution from cars, trucks and factories, raising levels of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. That contributes to climate change and to health problems. Mexico City is known for high levels of smog caused by urban expansion and traffic congestion.
Urban heat islands. Buildings, roads and other urban surfaces absorb and hold far more heat than forest or grassland. Add the heat pumped out by air conditioners, vehicles and industry, and cities become significantly warmer than the rural areas around them.
The dip in the middle is the giveaway. Green space inside a city measurably lowers the temperature around it.
Loss of biodiversity
Urban expansion destroys the natural habitats of plants and animals, so biodiversity falls and species are put at risk of extinction. It is not only the land that is built on. Roads cut habitats into small, isolated fragments, which makes it harder for populations to breed and recover.
One extra link in the chain is often one extra mark. Do not stop at “habitats are destroyed” if you can add “so biodiversity falls”.

Step 1: land is taken
Sprawl spreads low-density housing and roads into surrounding rural land, so forests, farmland and wetlands are cleared for building.
Step 2: habitats are destroyed
Clearing removes the habitats that plants and animals depend on for food, shelter and breeding sites.
Step 3: what is left gets fragmented
Roads cut the remaining habitat into small isolated patches, so populations cannot move between them or interbreed.
Step 4: the consequence
Population sizes fall and some species are put at risk of extinction, which reduces biodiversity in the area.

The urban heat island
Outline two reasons why an urban area is usually warmer than the rural area around it. (3 marks)
Reason 1: surfaces store heat
Buildings, roads and other urban surfaces absorb and retain more heat than natural landscapes such as forest or grassland, then release it slowly.
Reason 2: human activity releases heat
Air conditioners, vehicles and industry all pump additional waste heat into the air.

Cities and rivers
Suggest how urban expansion can change the flow of a river. (3 marks)
Point 1: direct changes
Expanding cities build dams, divert rivers and drain wetlands to make land available, which changes the natural flow of water.
Point 2: surfaces change too
Fields are replaced by roads and roofs, so rainwater runs off instead of soaking in and reaches the river much faster.
Point 3: the result
River levels rise quickly after rain, which increases flood risk downstream, while low flows and abstraction can leave other areas short of water. Las Vegas and the Colorado River is a good example.

💡 Exam tips
Always connect impacts together. Sprawl leads to deforestation, which leads to air pollution and loss of biodiversity.
Have named examples ready: Beijing for farmland, Sao Paulo for deforestation, Everglades for wetlands, Ganges for water pollution, Mexico City for smog.
Use the exact terms suburbanisation, urban sprawl and urban heat island.
Mention car dependency when discussing sprawl. It links land use straight to air pollution.
If you get a land use map across several years, describe direction and rate of expansion, and say which land type was lost.
Impacts can be social and economic too, not just environmental — longer commutes, higher infrastructure costs, less farmland for food.
⚠ Common mistakes
Using suburbanisation and sprawl as the same word. One is people moving, the other is the built-up area spreading.
Saying sprawl is just cities getting bigger. The key idea is that it is uncontrolled and low density.
Explaining heat islands with pollution alone. The main cause is hard surfaces absorbing and holding heat.
Stopping halfway through the chain. “Habitats are destroyed” is one mark; adding “so biodiversity falls and species risk extinction” is another.
Forgetting flooding. Hard surfaces stop infiltration, so run-off and flood risk both go up.
Writing vague examples. “A city in Brazil” is not a named example. Sao Paulo is.
