Urban Sprawl and Expansion

When a city runs out of room, it spreads. Fields become housing estates, streams get piped underground and the edge of the city creeps further out every year. This page is about why that happens and what it costs the environment.

Suburbanisation and sprawl

Suburbanisation is the process where people move from the dense central parts of cities to the less dense, peripheral areas we call suburbs. Cities expand into nearby rural or undeveloped land, and what gets built there is lower-density housing. People go looking for larger homes, green space and better living conditions away from a congested centre.

Urban sprawl is what happens when that expansion is uncontrolled. The built-up area spreads outwards into rural land, creating scattered, spread-out development with no clear edge to the city.

Do not mix these up Suburbanisation describes people moving. Urban sprawl describes the built-up area spreading, in a low-density and uncontrolled way.

The two are closely linked. Lower-density housing and commercial development need more land per person, so the boundaries of the city stretch. The result is longer commutes, greater car dependency, and rising demand for infrastructure such as roads, drains and schools.

The same number of people takes up far more land in the suburbs than in the centre. That extra land has to come from somewhere.

Causes of suburbanisation

Notice that four of those five causes are about choice, and only one is about cost. That matters when you evaluate solutions later: you cannot fix sprawl by building roads, because better roads make the suburbs even more attractive.

Environmental impacts of urban expansion

Every hectare a city gains was something else before. Here is the damage, grouped the way an exam question is likely to ask for it.

Loss of land and ecosystems

Water quality and river flows

Why sprawl floods. Soil soaks up rain. Concrete and tarmac do not. When you replace fields with roads and roofs, rainwater runs straight into drains and rivers instead of soaking in, so the river rises faster and higher after a storm.

Air pollution and heat

The dip in the middle is the giveaway. Green space inside a city measurably lowers the temperature around it.

Loss of biodiversity

Urban expansion destroys the natural habitats of plants and animals, so biodiversity falls and species are put at risk of extinction. It is not only the land that is built on. Roads cut habitats into small, isolated fragments, which makes it harder for populations to breed and recover.

One extra link in the chain is often one extra mark. Do not stop at “habitats are destroyed” if you can add “so biodiversity falls”.

Sprawl and biodiversity

Explain how urban sprawl can lead to a loss of biodiversity. (4 marks)

The urban heat island

Outline two reasons why an urban area is usually warmer than the rural area around it. (3 marks)
