Intraspecific Relationships

Members of the same species need exactly the same things, which makes them each other’s closest rivals. It also makes them each other’s most useful allies. Both happen, often in the same population, and the syllabus wants you to explain each one.

Intraspecific relationships are not one or the other. The same group of animals may hunt cooperatively in the morning and compete over the kill in the afternoon.

Intraspecific cooperation

In cooperation, members of a species work together to aid the survival of a group. Three examples from the syllabus, and it is worth knowing what each one adds.

The orca example in full. Orcas can cooperate during hunting to create a wave that washes a seal off an ice floe and into the water. It does not work every time — seals do escape — but working together clearly increases the chances of hunting success, which is exactly what “cooperation aids survival” means.

Intraspecific competition

Here is the logic in one line: individuals of the same species have the same needs, so they are frequently in competition with each other for the same resources. That is why intraspecific competition is usually more intense than competition between different species.

What are they actually fighting over? Notice that territory is not really a resource in itself. It is a way of monopolising the other two, which is why animals defend it so aggressively.

Male red deerFight each other for access to females; the dominant male mates with all the females in the group. Males bellow to display dominance as part of this competition.
RobinsAggressive towards other robins to defend their territory — so fiercely territorial that they will attack a bunch of red feathers.
Oak treesTrees growing close together in a woodland compete for light, water and minerals.
Do not assume competition has to look like a fight. Two badgers with overlapping territories are consuming the same resources, so food eaten by one is no longer available to the other. They are in competition and they may never even meet. Oak trees compete every single day without moving.

Worked examples

Why intraspecific competition is intense

Explain why competition between members of the same species is often more intense than competition between different species. (2 marks)

Point 1: identical needs Individuals of the same species have exactly the same needs, because they have the same adaptations and occupy the same niche. Point 2: total overlap This means they compete for all the same resources, whereas different species usually overlap only partially. Same species means complete overlap in requirements “they are the same” is not enough — say same needs, same resources

Cooperation in meerkats

Meerkats take turns acting as sentries while others forage. Explain how this cooperative behaviour aids survival of the group. (3 marks)

Point 1: roles are divided Different individuals take on different roles: some watch for predators while others watch young or hunt for food. Point 2: the benefit of the sentry A sentry can warn the group of an approaching predator, so more individuals survive than would if every animal were foraging with its head down. Point 3: the benefit of foraging Meanwhile the foragers can feed efficiently without constantly scanning for danger, so the group gains more food. Both members benefit — that is what makes it cooperation show a benefit on both sides, or you have described a favour rather than cooperation

Competition without conflict

Two oak trees grow three metres apart in a woodland. Explain whether they are in competition. (2 marks)

Point 1: yes, they are They are members of the same species with the same needs, growing close enough that their roots and canopies overlap. Point 2: the mechanism Light intercepted by one canopy, and water and minerals absorbed by one root system, are no longer available to the other. This is intraspecific competition even though there is no visible conflict. Competition is about shared resources, not about fighting plants are the best examples for this point, because they obviously cannot fight
