Cannot eat. Cannot sleep. Checking your phone every four minutes. New love looks a lot like a chemical problem, and when researchers put people in a brain scanner they found the same regions lighting up that light up for drugs.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers. They cross the synaptic cleft from the presynaptic neuron to the postsynaptic neuron.
Dopamine belongs to a group called the monoamines.
Brain regions linked to dopamine include the ventral tegmental area (VTA), nucleus accumbens, caudate nucleus and basal ganglia.
Dopamine is involved in movement (low levels are linked to Parkinson’s disease), in schizophrenia (the dopamine hypothesis), and above all in reward and motivation.
Fisher argued that early romantic love involves excess dopamine activity, which is what produces the euphoria.
The feelings tend to belong to roughly the first six months, after which the relationship settles.
The study you need is Fisher et al. (2005).
What dopamine actually does
Neurons do not touch. There is a tiny gap between them, and a message gets across it by chemical rather than electrical means. The sending neuron releases a neurotransmitter into that gap, and receptors on the receiving neuron pick it up.
Neurotransmitters allow communication inside the brain and between the brain and the rest of the body.
Dopamine has several jobs. It is central to movement and motor control, which is why a shortage of it is linked to Parkinson’s disease. Irregular levels have been associated with schizophrenia, which is the basis of the dopamine hypothesis. But the function that matters here is reward and motivation — dopamine is tied to pleasure, reinforcement and euphoria, and it pushes behaviour along by making things feel worth repeating.
Love that looks like addiction
Dopamine is strongly associated with addiction. The rush that comes with a drug such as cocaine — euphoria, excitement, feeling high — runs through the same reward circuits. Fisher noticed that people describing the early stages of romantic love use almost identical words.
People in the early stage also report restlessness, daydreaming about the person, and seeing colours as more vivid.
It does not last, and that is normal. These feelings belong to roughly the first six months. Once a couple get used to each other the relationship settles into something steadier. Losing the euphoria is not a sign the relationship is failing — it is the expected pattern.

To investigate whether there is a link between dopamine-rich brain regions and the early stages of romantic love.
Participants
A self-selected sample of 17 students from New York State University — 10 female and 7 male, aged 18 to 26, mean age 20. All said they were in love. Time spent with their partner ranged from 1 to 17 months, with a mean of 7 months.
Procedure
Each participant lay in an fMRI scanner and was shown a photograph of their romantic partner. This was followed by a distraction task, and then by a neutral photograph of an acquaintance they had no emotional connection with.
Results
When the partner’s photograph was shown, the most active areas were the right ventral tegmental area in the midbrain and the right caudate nucleus. Both regions are associated with dopamine production and with motivation and reward.
Conclusion
People in the early stages of romantic love activate brain regions linked to dopamine release when their partner is present, even only as an image. In that sense people become ‘addicted to love’.
The distraction task is not filler. It clears the emotional after-effects of the first photograph so the neutral image starts from a clean baseline. Examiners like students who can say why a step exists.
Evaluating the research
What is strong about it
The findings fit with existing work on substance addiction, so romantic love can be examined within the same craving-and-withdrawal framework. Two separate lines of research pointing the same way is good evidence.
Activity appeared in dopamine-rich areas only for the partner photograph, not the neutral one. That control comparison raises internal validity considerably.
fMRI gives an objective measure. Participants cannot fake a scan the way they can fake a questionnaire.
What is weaker about it
A mean age of 20 is young. That group is more socially active and more focused on pleasure-seeking than an older sample, so their reward systems may be unusually responsive.
There are other explanations for activation in those regions — excitement about being in a study, curiosity about the results, plain nerves.
17 self-selected participants from one university is a small and unrepresentative sample.
An fMRI scanner is about as unromantic an environment as exists. Ecological validity is low.
Link to concepts
Perspective: this is biological reductionism. It takes something layered and subjective — being in love — and attributes it to one neurotransmitter. Romantic love also operates at cognitive and sociocultural levels: shared worldview, shared hobbies, compatible personalities, familiarity. Reduction of this kind strips out the context and, in effect, takes the human out of human relationships.
Change: the study assumes the experience is universal and that dopamine cements the relationship. People are less predictable than that. Some ignore their feelings, some cheat, some take a job hundreds of miles away. Knowing you love someone and sabotaging the relationship anyway is cognitive dissonance, and no amount of dopamine prevents it.

💡 Exam tip
Name the two brain regions found active — VTA and caudate nucleus. Vague answers say ‘the reward centre’ and lose marks.
Say correlation, not cause. The scan shows activity alongside love, not that dopamine creates love.
The six-month limit is worth a sentence. It shows you know the claim is specific to the early stage.
Reductionism is the key evaluation term for the whole biological approach. Use it precisely.
If a question allows it, contrast this page with self-disclosure or social exchange theory — different levels of analysis on the same behaviour is exactly the sort of link that lifts an essay.
⚠ Common mix-up
Saying dopamine causes love. The study shows brain activity, not causation. This is the most common error on this topic.
Confusing dopamine with oxytocin. Dopamine is reward and motivation. Oxytocin is bonding and attachment.
Claiming the effects last forever. Fisher restricts them to roughly the first six months.
Getting the sample wrong. 17 participants in total: 10 female and 7 male.
Forgetting the neutral photograph. Without it the study proves very little.
