Worldviews and the Environment
A worldview is the widest lens a person owns. It sits above every individual perspective they hold, and in ESS it has a specific name when it is pointed at the natural world: an environmental value system.

A worldview is the lens through which a group of people see and understand the world around them.
Worldviews are built from cultural beliefs, philosophical ideas, political opinions and religious teachings, and they shape how people think, believe and behave.
Worldviews are broader and deeper than perspectives. Perspectives are more specific, more immediate and change more readily.
The internet and social media expose people to worldviews far beyond their own community.
People hold complex mixes of beliefs, so sorting them into neat categories is difficult.
An environmental value system (EVS) is how a person or group perceives the environment and the resources it provides.
An EVS behaves like a system: it has inputs (cultural, religious, social, political, economic and environmental influences) and outputs (perspectives, evaluations, decisions and actions).
EVSs are usually grouped as ecocentric, anthropocentric or technocentric.
Worldviews versus perspectives
Both are ways of seeing. The difference is scale, and how easily they move.

Your worldview, filtered through the details of one situation
Change one perspective and the worldview usually survives. Change the worldview and every perspective inside it moves at once, which is why that happens so rarely.
Technology, media and the problem with categories
The internet has done something genuinely new here. A student in one country can encounter the cultures, religions and political ideas of a dozen others in an afternoon of scrolling. Worldviews are no longer bounded by the community you happen to live in.
That makes categorising people harder, not easier. Individuals hold complex mixes of beliefs — someone can be liberal on social questions and conservative on economic ones, or deeply committed to conservation while flying regularly. Any model that sorts people into three boxes is a simplification, and you should say so when you use one.
Environmental value systems
Definition
An environmental value system is the way an individual, or a group, perceives the environment and the resources it provides.
Your own EVS decides how you perceive environmental issues, how you evaluate them, and what action — if any — you decide to take. It is shaped by cultural, religious, social, political, economic and environmental factors, and those factors reach you as flows of information. You then process and transform that information into a view of the environment and a way of acting on it.
An EVS is a system
Calling it a system is not decoration. It is a system because it takes in a defined set of inputs and produces a defined set of outputs.
The four outputs are worth memorising in order: perceptions, evaluations, decisions, actions. Questions often ask for them by name.
The three categories
There is a very wide spectrum of environmental value systems, but they are usually grouped into three broad types. Treat them as reference points on a line rather than boxes people sit inside.
The same person can shift along the line depending on the issue — ecocentric about a local woodland, technocentric about energy supply.
Ecocentrism
A philosophical and ethical position that places the intrinsic value of nature above human needs and interests.
Holds that all living organisms and ecosystems have worth in themselves and deserve protection for their own sake.
Argues for practices that keep the balance and integrity of ecosystems intact, rather than exploiting them.
Closely associated with environmental movements and conservation work.
Anthropocentrism
Places human beings at the centre, prioritising human needs and interests over those of other species.
Holds that humans have the right to use natural resources and ecosystems for their own benefit.
In principle this could mean careful, sustainable management of global systems. In practice it often produces overexploitation, habitat destruction and pollution.
Values biodiversity mainly where protecting it delivers economic or ecological advantages to people.
Criticised for ignoring the intrinsic worth of nature.
Technocentrism
Places technology and human ingenuity at the centre of problem-solving and decision-making.
Assumes environmental problems can be solved through innovation and economic growth.
Emphasises understanding natural systems well enough to control them, and letting scientific research guide policy.
Criticised as short-sighted, and for underestimating how complex and interconnected environmental problems are.

Ecocentric
Reuse and restraint make it inherently more sustainable; minimises environmental impact; better for long-term human wellbeing; needs no new technology to work
Conservation can be costly with no quick economic return; developing economies argue they should not be asked to hold back; individual attitudes are hard to change
Technocentric
Substitutes materials rather than forcing costly industrial change; solves problems without inconveniencing people; allows social and economic progress to continue
Permits even higher rates of resource consumption; may create new environmental problems; expensive; leaves people increasingly disconnected from nature
Anthropocentrism sits between the two, which is why it is missing from that table. It borrows from both: the belief that systems can be managed, and the belief that human benefit is the point of managing them. If a question asks you to contrast two EVSs, the ends of the spectrum give you the sharpest contrast.

Plastic waste in the oceans is a useful test case, because ecocentric and technocentric thinking lead to genuinely different plans.

The honest summary. Ecocentrism demands systemic change — fundamental shifts in how people behave and consume. Technocentrism develops new tools to handle the consequences. Most real policy ends up using both, which is itself an anthropocentric compromise.

Identifying an EVS
A government minister says: “We will meet our emissions targets through carbon capture technology, without asking families to change how they live.” Identify the environmental value system shown and justify your answer. (3 marks)
Step 1: name it
This is a technocentric environmental value system.
Step 2: justify from the words used
The solution offered is a technological one, and the explicit promise is that consumption and lifestyle need not change — growth continues while innovation deals with the consequences.
Step 3: contrast
An ecocentric response would have started from reducing emissions at source through lower consumption, accepting that behaviour must change.
Technocentric — technology solves it, behaviour stays the samequote the phrase that gave it away. Justification means pointing at evidence, not restating the label

Applying the EVS system model
Outline how two people raised in the same town could develop different environmental value systems. (4 marks)
Point 1: the inputs are not identical
Although they share a location, their inputs differ — different families, schooling, religious background, economic situation and media they consume.
Point 2: processing differs too
Even identical information is processed differently, because each person filters it through what they already believe.
Point 3: the outputs diverge
They therefore perceive the same local issue differently, evaluate it differently, and reach different decisions and actions.
Point 4: a concrete example
One may see a proposed quarry as needed employment; the other as the loss of a valued landscape.
Different inputs, different processing, different outputs — from one system modelusing the system vocabulary (inputs, outputs) is what makes this an ESS answer rather than a general one

Evaluating the three-category model
Evaluate the usefulness of classifying environmental value systems as ecocentric, anthropocentric or technocentric. (4 marks)
Strength 1: it makes comparison possible
The three categories give a shared vocabulary for describing why two groups propose different solutions to the same problem.
Strength 2: it predicts the kind of policy expected
Knowing a government’s position on the spectrum tells you a great deal about the measures it will favour.
Limitation 1: people are mixtures
Individuals hold complex mixes of beliefs and rarely sit cleanly in one category. The same person may be ecocentric locally and technocentric globally.
Limitation 2: it is a spectrum, not three groups
The categories are reference points on a continuous range, so classifying someone as simply “anthropocentric” loses most of the detail.
A useful simplification, provided you say out loud that it is one“evaluate” wants both sides and a judgement — two strengths and two limitations, then a verdict
💡 Exam tips
Learn the EVS definition well enough to write it in one sentence.
Know the inputs and outputs by name. Diagram-labelling questions use exactly those words.
When identifying an EVS, quote the evidence that gave it away.
Describe the three categories as a spectrum. It shows a level of understanding the labels alone do not.
Have one real example ready for each category — a policy, an organisation or a campaign.
Say plainly that worldviews are complex and resist neat categorisation. That is a credited point, not a hedge.
⚠ Common mistakes
Treating the three categories as fixed boxes that every person fits into.
Confusing anthropocentric with technocentric. One centres human interests; the other centres technological fixes.
Describing ecocentrism as “caring about the environment”. The distinctive claim is that nature has value independent of humans.
Forgetting that an EVS is a system and skipping the inputs and outputs entirely.
Using worldview and perspective interchangeably. One is broad and slow, the other narrow and mobile.
Assuming a technocentric position is anti-environment. It is a different route to the same stated goal.
