Conservation usually means holding a line. Rewilding is more ambitious: put the missing processes back — predation, seed dispersal, nutrient cycling — and then step away and let the ecosystem run itself. The goal is not a managed garden. It is a system that no longer needs you.

What rewilding is trying to do
DefinitionRewilding is ecosystem restoration that aims to rebuild natural ecosystem processes so the system becomes stable and self-regulating, with minimal ongoing human management.
Notice what that definition is not about. It is not a list of species to reintroduce. It is about processes: something eating something else, seeds being carried and dropped, nutrients moving through the soil. Get the processes running and the species list tends to look after itself.
1. Species reintroduction
Reintroducing apex predators reduces herbivore populations, which allows habitat vegetation to recover.
That boosts the diversity of plant species, which in turn enhances total biodiversity.
Wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park, USA. They help control deer populations, which has allowed certain types of vegetation to recover.
Reintroducing keystone species can rebuild the physical structure of an ecosystem. Beavers have been reintroduced to parts of the UK; their dams create large wetland areas that support diverse wildlife.
The wolves are not really the point. Predation is. What returns is a process that had been missing from the system for decades.
2. Improving habitat connectivity
Connecting fragmented habitats so species can move freely between them.
Wildlife corridors, such as hedgerows on farmland, link small pockets of habitat.
This lets wildlife roam over larger areas, increasing the resources available to them.
Larger populations can then establish, which means more genetic diversity and less risk of local extinction.
3. Stopping agriculture
Allowing land previously used for farming to return to its natural state.
The Knepp Estate in England has been rewilded. The former farmland now supports wild ponies, pigs and longhorn cattle.
These animals promote biodiversity by disturbing soils, dispersing seeds and grazing vegetation, so no single plant species dominates.
Note the parallel with the elephants from page 1: large herbivores creating variety through disturbance.
4. Limiting human influence
Preventing the harvesting of resources, for example by stopping logging or fishing.
Ecological management techniques such as controlled grazing or burning may still be used at first to restore a habitat.
The aim is to minimise direct human management and let ecosystems self-regulate as much as possible.
The fourth box is the hardest for people to accept. Rewilding succeeds when managers stop deciding what the outcome should look like.
🧩 Case study: Hinewai Reserve, New Zealand
The site. Banks Peninsula, New Zealand. Once farmland, now privately owned with the aim of restoring the area’s natural ecosystem.
Initial intervention. Some human input was needed at the start, mainly the removal of non-native species.
The approach. The area is now managed with minimal human intervention, allowing native communities to be restored by succession.
Access. Human activities are limited, though the public can walk in the reserve.
Successes. Rapid regrowth of native bush, an increase in native bird populations, and effective control of invasive species.
Why it matters. It shows rewilding can work on land written off as farmland, and that succession does most of the work if you let it.
The Hinewai lesson is the one examiners like: a bit of intervention at the start, then patience. Removing the invasive species was essential, because succession would otherwise have produced a weed-dominated system rather than native bush.
Rewilding is not uncontroversial. Reintroducing predators can bring conflict with farmers whose livestock is at risk. Taking farmland out of production raises questions about food supply and rural jobs. Successful projects almost always involve local people in the decision from the start — which connects straight back to environmental justice and procedural fairness.

Restore the process, not the postcard. Rewilding is not about recreating a picture of the past; it is about getting predation, dispersal and cycling working again and accepting whatever the system becomes.
