The model, briefly
You met this framework in 1.3. The planetary boundaries model outlines nine critical processes and systems that have regulated the stability and resilience of the Earth system during the Holocene epoch — the roughly stable period in which agriculture and civilisation developed.
The model measures how far human disturbance has pushed each process, and aims to highlight where action is needed to avoid abrupt and irreversible changes. Staying inside all nine is the safe operating space for humanity.
Definition
The biodiversity planetary boundary is the limit within which humanity can safely operate while maintaining the Earth’s biodiversity. It is often referred to as biosphere integrity.
What biosphere integrity actually covers
Genetic diversity — preventing the loss of species, and with them the genetic variation they carry.
Functional integrity — preventing the loss of ecosystem functioning: the processes that keep systems running, such as pollination, decomposition and nutrient cycling.
The two are different. An ecosystem can keep most of its species and still lose a function if the one species performing it disappears.
This matters because biodiversity loss has significant negative impacts on human life and on the health of the planet as a whole.
Notice the link back to 3.1. Genetic diversity and functional integrity are the same two ideas you met as “genetic diversity” and “resilience”, scaled up to the whole biosphere. This topic is one argument, not five separate ones.
Where we currently sit
The amber band is a zone of uncertainty, not a safety margin. It marks the range where scientists cannot say confidently where the real threshold sits.
Biodiversity loss is occurring at an alarming rate because of human activities such as deforestation, pollution and overfishing, as well as human-induced climate change.
Scientists estimate we have already crossed the biodiversity planetary boundary.
That means the current rate of species extinction is higher than the safe limit.
Conservation and ecosystem regeneration measures can reverse the decline, with the aim of moving back towards the safe operating space.
Why “already crossed” is not the same as “too late”. Crossing a boundary raises the risk of abrupt, large-scale, irreversible change. It is not a switch that has been flipped. The whole point of the model is to show where effort is most urgently needed — and biodiversity is one of the boundaries where recovery is still physically possible if the pressures are removed.
Action at four levels
Moving back inside the boundary needs measures implemented at every level. None of these works on its own, and it is worth being able to give examples at each.
The bars widen because the reach grows, not because the higher levels matter more. A treaty with no public support behind it tends not to survive a change of government.
