Ecology has a set of words that look almost the same in an exam: species, population, community, habitat, ecosystem. They are not interchangeable. Each one is a bigger box than the one before it, and examiners take marks off when you use the wrong box. Get the ladder straight now and every later topic gets easier.

A species is a group of organisms that can breed together and produce young that can themselves breed.
A population is all the members of one species in one place at one time.
A community is all the populations of all the species in that place.
A habitat is where an organism lives; an ecosystem is the community plus the non-living things it interacts with.
Living parts are biotic, non-living parts are abiotic.
Ecosystems are open systems: both energy and matter can cross the boundary.
The biosphere is the thin skin of the planet where all of this happens.
Start with the biosphere
The biosphere is the zone around the Earth where life is found. It is where the atmosphere (air), the hydrosphere (water) and the lithosphere (rock and soil) meet and overlap. Nothing lives in only one of those — a tree has roots in soil, leaves in air and water moving through the middle of it.
It is much thinner than most students imagine. On a globe the size of a football, the whole biosphere would be thinner than the paint. Almost everything alive sits in a band a few kilometres deep, from the shallow ocean floor up to the tops of mountains.
If a question asks you to describe the biosphere, the word examiners want is narrow. It is the thin, life-supporting layer where air, water and land meet.
The ladder: individual to biosphere
Everything in ecology is built up from single organisms. Each level below contains all the levels above it, so nothing is lost as you move down the list — you are just zooming out.
The only genuinely tricky step is community to ecosystem, because that is where soil, water, air and sunlight are added to the living organisms.
Species
Two organisms belong to the same species if they can breed and produce fertile offspring — offspring that can go on to have young of their own. That last word matters. A horse and a donkey can breed, but the mule they produce is almost always infertile, so horses and donkeys stay as separate species.
Population
A population is one species, one area, one time. A single species can be split into many populations. Common frogs, for example, live in ponds all over a country. Frogs in a pond on one side of a city and frogs in a pond twenty miles away are the same species, but they are separate populations because they never actually meet to breed — they are geographically isolated.
Over time, separated populations can drift apart. Different food, different weather and different predators mean each population ends up slightly different from the others, even though they all still belong to one species.
Community and habitat
A community is every population in the area, added together and interacting. In a wood that means oaks, bluebells, badgers, beetles, fungi and bacteria all at once. They are linked by food, shelter, pollination and disease, so a change to one population is felt by the others.
The habitat is simply the place: the woodland floor, a rock pool, the bark of a tree. Describe a habitat by naming where it is and what conditions it offers.
Ecosystem: living plus non-living
An ecosystem is the community plus the physical environment, interacting as one unit. Split it into two lists and you will never be confused:
Biotic (living)
Abiotic (non-living)
Plants and algae
Temperature and sunlight
Animals
Water, rainfall and humidity
Fungi
Soil type and pH
Bacteria and other microbes
Minerals, nutrients and salinity
The abiotic parts supply the conditions and raw materials the living parts need. The living parts change the abiotic parts back — roots hold soil together, trees shade the ground, decomposers release minerals. That two-way link is why the word interacting is in the definition.
Ecosystems come in every size. A puddle with algae, insect larvae and mud in it is a genuine ecosystem, and so is the Amazon. What makes something an ecosystem is not its size but the fact that living and non-living parts work together in one place.
Ecosystems are open systems
An open system lets both energy and matter cross its boundary. Ecosystems do exactly that, which is why no ecosystem is ever truly sealed off from its neighbours.
Energy enters as light and leaves as heat, so it must be replaced every day. Nutrients can be recycled inside the ecosystem many times before they are lost.
Energy in, energy out. Plants and algae capture sunlight. Every organism that respires releases some of that energy as heat, which escapes into space. This is why ecosystems need a constant supply of sunlight but do not need a constant supply of new atoms.

💡 Exam tip
Definitions get marked word by word. Population needs same species, same area, same time. Miss one and you lose the mark.
Say fertile offspring when you define a species. “Can breed together” on its own is not enough.
Community = living only. Ecosystem = living and non-living. Check which one the question is asking for.
Habitat is a place. Niche (coming later) is a role. Do not swap them.
If asked for abiotic factors, give measurable physical things: temperature, pH, salinity, light, soil type.
“Interacting as a system” belongs in your ecosystem definition — it is often worth its own mark.
⚠ Common mix-up
Using “community” when you mean “ecosystem”. If the answer mentions soil, water or temperature, it is an ecosystem.
Calling a single organism a population. One badger is an individual; all the badgers in the wood are a population.
Thinking a species is always one population. A species is often split into many separate populations.
Confusing habitat with ecosystem. A habitat is only the address; an ecosystem includes everything happening at that address.
Saying ecosystems are closed. They are open — matter crosses the boundary as well as energy.
Forgetting that fungi and bacteria are biotic. Students often list only plants and animals.
