Two people can agree completely about the science and still disagree completely about what should be done. That is not a failure of evidence — it is a difference in environmental value systems, and ESS expects you to be able to explain it rather than take sides.

Most real projects need several of these factors together, not just one.
Value systems drive strategy choice
Your value system is the filter you view environmental problems through. It decides what counts as a good outcome, so it decides which strategy looks sensible to you.
The useful skill is not memorising the three labels — it is reading a conservation project and working out which value system it reflects.
Ecocentric perspectives
Focus on the intrinsic value of biodiversity — species matter whether or not they are useful to us.
Prioritise low-intervention in situ strategies: minimal human interference, carried out within the natural habitat where the species live.
Typical action: setting aside large areas of land as wilderness reserves or national parks, such as the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
Anthropocentric and technocentric perspectives
Focus on the economic and societal value of biodiversity — nature is managed for what it gives people.
Encourage scientific interventions: zoos, gene banks, captive breeding and ecotourism.
Typical action: a conservation breeding programme for European bison at the Highland Wildlife Park in Scotland.
Watch the trap in the wording. “Ecocentric” does not mean “cares more about nature” and “technocentric” does not mean “does not care”. A technocentric conservationist may be trying just as hard — they simply believe technology and management are the way to fix the problem.
What makes conservation actually succeed
The syllabus gives five factors. In real projects they overlap, and a project usually fails when one of them is missing rather than because the science was wrong.

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 gives legal protection to endangered species and habitats in the UK.
Scientific research
Using scientific knowledge to inform decisions rather than guessing.
The British Trust for Ornithology carries out extensive research on bird populations to guide conservation.
The one that decides everything. If local people are against a project, it will be quietly undermined no matter how good the science or how big the budget. Community support is usually the factor to lead with in an evaluation answer.
Environmental justice in conservation
Conservation is not automatically fair. Protecting an area can mean somebody loses access to fishing grounds, grazing land or firewood — and that somebody is often the poorest group involved.
The idea in one lineEnvironmental justice in conservation means different social groups receive a fair share of the conservation benefits and the conservation burdens.
Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) in the UK are a good worked example of this being taken seriously:
They are set up to protect marine habitats and species while also considering the livelihoods of local communities.
Stakeholders — fishermen, conservationists and local residents — are involved in the decision-making process, balancing ecological protection against economic and social needs.
This collaborative approach helps ensure the benefits, such as improved fish stocks and healthier ecosystems, are shared among different groups.
At the same time the burdens, such as restrictions on fishing, are managed fairly rather than dumped on one group.
If you can name a stakeholder group and say what they gain and what they lose, you are doing exactly what the environmental justice part of this topic asks for. “Fishermen lose short-term catch but gain long-term stock recovery” is worth more than a paragraph of general fairness talk.

💡 Exam tip
Match the perspective to the strategy. Ecocentric goes with in situ and low intervention; technocentric goes with ex situ and technology.
Learn the five success factors as a checklist — they answer any “why did this project succeed or fail” question.
For environmental justice, always name a stakeholder group and state a benefit and a burden.
Use “spectrum” language. Very few real projects are purely one perspective.
Keep two UK examples handy (Cairngorms, Highland Wildlife Park) — they map cleanly onto the two ends.
In “evaluate” answers, judge from more than one perspective. That is exactly what the command term wants here.
⚠ Common mix-up
Anthropocentric is not the same as technocentric. Anthropocentric puts people at the centre; technocentric adds strong faith in technology to solve problems.
Ecocentric is not “anti-human”. It is about giving nature value independent of human use.
Environmental justice is not just about money. It covers access, decision-making power and cultural rights too.
Community support is not the same as public awareness. One is the people who live there; the other is the general public.
Legislation without enforcement changes nothing. Say “and enforcement” whenever you mention laws.
Do not present one value system as the correct answer. ESS marks you for balance, not for picking a side.
