Most farming aims to hold soil steady. Regenerative farming aims to leave it better than it found it. The trick is using animals as working parts of the system rather than just products — but only when they are managed carefully, because the same animals that build soil can destroy it.

What makes it “regenerative”
The word is doing real work here. Sustainable farming aims to keep natural capital steady. Regenerative farming aims to increase it — more soil organic matter, more biodiversity, more productivity over time, achieved through natural processes rather than bought inputs.
That is why mixed farming keeps coming up. Combining plants and animals lets waste from one become an input to the other, so nutrients cycle around the farm instead of being bought at one end and lost at the other.
Animals as farm tools
Think of livestock as machinery that feeds itself and fertilises as it works.
Pigs and chickens clear vegetation and aerate the soil as they root and scratch, which reduces the need for heavy machinery.
Their movement disturbs the soil just enough to help seeds germinate, while reducing compaction rather than causing it.
They deposit manure directly onto the field, acting as a natural fertiliser that raises nutrient levels and organic matter.
The loop only closes if the animals move on in time. Left in one place, grazing turns from disturbance into destruction.

Mob grazing
Mob grazing means moving animals in concentrated groups into small, specific areas for short periods, then moving them on. It is sometimes called “tall grass grazing”, because the grass grows long between visits.
Compare it with continuous grazing, where animals stay in the same field all season. Under continuous grazing, animals repeatedly eat the regrowth on their favourite plants, so those plants never rebuild their root systems. Mob grazing is more controlled, and it copies how large wild herbivores actually move — graze heavily, then leave.
The recovery period is the whole mechanism. Plants left alone regrow fully, which maintains their root systems, and deeper roots hold soil together and improve soil structure.
Same number of animals, same field, completely different outcome. What changes is how long the plants get to recover before the herd returns.

Notice how many of these advantages and disadvantages are the same sentence with different management. That is the honest answer to “is regenerative farming better?” — it depends entirely on how well it is run.
Plant-based diets and regenerative systems
Regenerative farming is not only about animals. Diverse cropping supports plant-based diets by growing a variety of crops rather than one, using crop rotation, cover cropping and intercropping.
These techniques keep soil healthy by adding organic matter, reducing erosion, retaining moisture and controlling pests naturally. So diverse cropping does two jobs at once: it helps meet food demand and it builds a resilient soil structure at the same time.

Assuming regenerative farming is automatically better. Managed badly it causes overgrazing and compaction.
Confusing mob grazing with simply having lots of animals. The density is high but the duration is short.
Thinking regenerative farming means no animals. Animals are usually central to it.
Using sustainable and regenerative interchangeably. Sustainable maintains; regenerative improves.
Forgetting the plant side. Diverse cropping is part of the syllabus too.
Ignoring scale. What works on a mixed family farm is much harder across thousands of hectares.
