Flint was once one of the most valuable substances a person could own. Today you could not sell a bucket of it. Nothing about the flint changed — we did. Value sits in the relationship between a resource and a society, which is why it shifts from place to place and decade to decade.

Nine kinds of value
The goods and services natural capital produces matter to people in many different ways at once. A forest is timber, but it is also a carbon store, a place to walk, a source of identity for the people who live near it, and a home for species that would exist whether or not humans were watching.
Only the economic row has an obvious price. The other eight are real but invisible to a market, which is why they need naming explicitly in policy and in exam answers.

If a question asks you to discuss the value of an ecosystem, do not write four paragraphs on money. Pick three or four different value types and give one line each. Breadth is what is being assessed.
Why value keeps changing
Natural capital is dynamic. The same resource can be treasured in one country and ignored in the next, or valuable in one decade and worthless in the next. Six kinds of factor drive that.
This pair is the fastest way to answer any question about the dynamic nature of natural capital. One resource fell, one rose, and the cause in both cases sits outside the resource itself.

Negative natural capital is a real idea. If a society believes a resource does more harm than good, its value can go below zero — the cost of dealing with it exceeds anything it produces. Uranium in some regions, and increasingly coal, are the standard examples.

💡 Exam tip
You do not need all nine value types memorised. Four or five you can explain confidently is plenty.
Always include intrinsic value in a discussion. It is the one that shows you understand the ethical dimension.
Learn the flint and lithium pair. It answers dynamic-value questions almost by itself.
Name the factor type (cultural, political, technological) alongside every example you give.
Remember value varies regionally as well as over time — uranium is the clearest case.
Mention present and future generations. It links this page to sustainability directly.
⚠️ Common mix-up
Treating value as only economic. Eight of the nine types have no market price.
Confusing intrinsic value with aesthetic value. Intrinsic worth exists whether anyone is looking or not.
Assuming value only ever rises. Flint, whale oil and coal all show the opposite.
Saying scarcity always raises value. It does only if there is demand as well.
Forgetting political factors. Regulation can change a resource’s market value overnight.
Missing the possibility of negative natural capital in some societies.
