These two words get used interchangeably in everyday speech, and that is exactly why exams test them. They measure the same things — temperature, rainfall, wind — but over completely different time scales, and mixing them up will cost you marks in climate change questions later.

Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a specific time and place.
Weather can change in hours and covers temperature, humidity, cloud cover, precipitation, wind speed and air pressure.
Climate is the long-term average of weather conditions for a region.
Climate is usually averaged over 30 years or more.
Climate is shaped by solar radiation, atmospheric circulation, ocean currents, land features and greenhouse gases.
You need weather to forecast tomorrow, and climate to spot a trend or assess climate change.
Same measurements, different time scale
Imagine standing outside on one cold, wet morning in July. That is weather. Now imagine looking at every July for the last thirty years and working out the average temperature and rainfall. That is climate. Nothing about the instruments changed — only how long you watched for.
If a statement has a date attached, it is weather. If it has a period of years attached, it is climate.
What weather covers
Weather is the short-term variation in the atmosphere at one place. It includes:
Temperature
Humidity
Cloud cover
Precipitation
Wind speed
Air pressure
All of these can shift noticeably in the space of a single afternoon, which is why weather forecasting only works reliably a few days ahead.
What climate covers
Climate describes the overall pattern of those same factors over a long period. The standard averaging window is 30 years, long enough that one unusual year cannot dominate the picture.
Several things control a region’s climate:
Solar radiation — how much energy that latitude receives.
Atmospheric circulation — whether air is rising (wet) or sinking (dry) there.
Land features — mountains, distance from the sea, altitude.
Greenhouse gas concentrations — how much heat the atmosphere retains.
Why the distinction matters for climate change. A single hot summer is not evidence of climate change, and a single cold winter is not evidence against it. Only the 30-year average tells you whether the climate itself has moved.
A phrase worth memorising: climate is what you expect, weather is what you get. It is short, it is accurate, and it gives you the difference in one line under exam pressure.

For each statement, say whether it describes weather or climate: (a) It rained heavily in Lisbon last Tuesday. (b) Lisbon receives about 725 mm of rain per year. (c) A thunderstorm is forecast for tonight.

💡 Exam tip
Give the time scale in your definition. “Long-term” is vague; “averaged over 30 years or more” is precise.
Include “at a specific time and place” in your weather definition — both halves are marked.
Learn two or three of the factors that control climate; questions often ask you to name them.
In climate change questions, say explicitly that you are talking about a trend, not an individual event.
Do not list every weather variable you can think of. Three or four named ones is plenty.
⚠ Common mix-up
Using the words as synonyms. They describe the same variables over completely different periods.
Saying climate never changes. It does — just slowly, which is why a 30-year window is needed to see it.
Treating one extreme event as proof. Extreme events fit into climate arguments only as part of a pattern.
Forgetting “place” in the weather definition. Weather is always tied to a location as well as a moment.
Listing only temperature. Rainfall matters just as much, especially for biome distribution.
