Even if every emission stopped tomorrow, a great deal of warming is already locked in. Adaptation is the honest response to that: not giving up on cutting emissions, but accepting that some change is coming anyway and preparing for it properly.

Mitigation or adaptation?

A wind farm is mitigation. A sea wall is adaptation. Restoring a mangrove forest is both, because it stores carbon and absorbs storm surge. Every strategy in this topic can be sorted with one question: does it change the cause, or manage the consequence?
Adaptation is sometimes treated as admitting defeat. It is not. Mitigation decides how bad the second half of this century gets; adaptation decides how many people survive the next twenty years.

Standards for resisting hurricanes, floods, wildfire and heat — fire-resistant materials, reflective surfaces and green space to cool urban heat islands
Hard defences and natural ones
Coastal protection is the clearest place to see the trade-off examiners want you to discuss. You can build a wall, or you can restore what was there before.
A sea wall protects one stretch and often worsens erosion further along the coast. A mangrove belt protects a whole shoreline and grows back after a storm.
Adaptation plans
An adaptation plan is a strategy for helping individuals, communities and whole societies cope. The aim is always the same pair: reduce vulnerability to climate hazards and increase resilience to the impacts.
NAPAs — National Adaptation Programmes of Action
Written by Least Developed Countries and submitted to the UNFCCC.
They identify and prioritise the most urgent needs rather than long-term plans, focusing on agriculture, water and health.
Bangladesh has used NAPA projects to improve flood forecasting and early warning systems.
Malawi has focused on food security through drought-resistant crops and sustainable land management.
National and city plans
OneNYC (New York City) — protection against coastal flooding, plus green infrastructure to cool the city and absorb rainfall.
Netherlands Delta Programme — robust flood defences and adaptive water management designed around sea-level rise.
UK Climate Change Risk Assessment — identifies the country’s key risks and adaptation priorities, such as flood risk management and resilient infrastructure.
The UNDP’s role
The UN Development Programme helps developing countries build and deliver adaptation plans, providing technical expertise and funding for the most immediate threats. The process is always the same shape.
Community involvement is not a courtesy. A flood shelter in the wrong place, or a crop nobody wants to eat, is money spent for nothing.
The equity point: the countries that need adaptation most urgently have usually emitted the least. That is why funding and technology transfer from wealthier countries runs through every one of these agreements — and why it is one of the most contested parts of climate negotiations.

Sea wall
Protects immediately and reliably, and needs little land.
But construction costs are high, upkeep is permanent, it provides no habitat, and it can shift erosion further along the coast.Mangroves

Sort every strategy with one question: does it change the cause or manage the consequence?
Name specific plans — NAPAs, OneNYC, the Netherlands Delta Programme, the UK CCRA. Named detail scores.
Use the vocabulary: vulnerability, resilience, adaptive capacity. These are the assessment terms.
Point out where a strategy does both jobs, such as mangroves or urban green space. It shows real understanding.
Bring in cost and who pays. Adaptation is often needed most where money is scarcest.
⚠ Common mix-up
Adaptation is not a replacement for mitigation. Without emission cuts, the impacts eventually outgrow anything you can adapt to.
Desalination is not free water. It uses a great deal of energy and produces concentrated brine that has to go somewhere.
NAPAs are not global agreements. They are national plans by Least Developed Countries, submitted under the UNFCCC.
Hard defences do not always win. A sea wall can protect one town and increase erosion for its neighbour.
Resilience is not just infrastructure. Early warning systems, health services and community organisation save more lives per unit spent than concrete does.
