You can save a species by taking it somewhere safe, or by making the place it already lives safe. Those two answers lead to completely different strategies, and the second one is nearly always better. Knowing why is most of this page.
📚 What you need to know
Conservation strategies divide into species-based, habitat-based and mixed approaches.
Ex situ means conservation action taken outside the natural habitat: botanic gardens, zoos, captive breeding, seed banks.
In situ means action taken within the natural habitat: national parks, reserves and sanctuaries.
CITES regulates international trade in endangered species through a licensing system.
A mixed approach combines both, often using a flagship or keystone species to justify protecting a whole ecosystem.
Flagship species are charismatic and popular; keystone species hold the ecosystem together.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), signed in Rio in 1992, is the main international treaty, and includes the Nagoya Protocol.
Ex situ and in situ
Ex situ is the emergency room: valuable, expensive and not where anyone wants to stay. In situ is the only place a species can go on being part of a working ecosystem.
Species-based conservation and ex situ strategies
Species-based conservation focuses on protecting individual species, especially endangered ones. It often uses ex situ strategies, meaning the action happens outside the species’ natural habitat.

Learn the full name behind CITES: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. You will not be asked to recite it, but knowing that “trade” is in the title tells you exactly what it does — and what it does not do, which is protect habitat.

Habitat-based conservation and in situ strategies
Habitat-based conservation focuses on protecting and restoring habitats to support the species living there. It uses in situ strategies, meaning action within the natural habitat.
National parks protect large areas of natural habitat, preserving the ecosystems and species inside them, and provide opportunities for research, tourism and education. Yellowstone National Park in the USA protects a range of ecosystems and species including grizzly bears and wolves.
Reserves and sanctuaries are areas set aside for particular species and their habitats. They often involve community participation and sustainable use of resources — the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya protects lions, elephants and wildebeest.
The great advantage is that ecological processes keep running: species carry on breeding, feeding, dispersing and evolving in place.
The mixed approach
A mixed approach combines species-based and habitat-based strategies. It often uses a flagship or keystone species to justify conserving an entire ecosystem.
The flagship is a fundraising and public-support strategy as much as an ecological one. Nobody puts a rare beetle on a poster, but the beetle is protected all the same.
Flagship species
Charismatic species that are well known and popular with the public — elephants, pandas, tigers.
They act as symbols for conservation efforts, raising awareness and support.
By protecting them, their habitats and the other species sharing those habitats are also protected.
The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) lives in the Virunga Mountains spanning Rwanda, Uganda and the DRC, and has faced habitat destruction, poaching and human conflict. Focusing on gorillas and their habitat has protected many other plants and animals in the same ecosystem.
Keystone species in conservation
Protecting a keystone species maintains the integrity of the ecosystem, which benefits everything else in it.
The sea otter is a keystone species in the kelp forests of the Pacific Northwest. It feeds on sea urchins, which are herbivores capable of destroying kelp forests, so the otters keep the kelp standing.
Remove the otters and urchin numbers explode, the kelp is stripped, and the whole community that depends on kelp goes with it.
🧩 Case study: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
Why it is mixed. It combines species-based and habitat-based strategies to protect the giant panda in China.
Captive breeding. A breeding programme run to increase the panda population.
Habitat restoration. Restoring and expanding the bamboo forests pandas depend on.
Education and awareness. Tours, programmes and exhibits generating public support for conservation.
Research and collaboration. Study of panda biology, with international partners; facilities include breeding centres, a veterinary hospital, naturalistic enclosures and research laboratories.
Achievements. Panda numbers raised, genetic diversity maintained through careful breeding, habitat restored, and — because the panda is a flagship — the broader ecosystem and its other species protected too.
Why the genetic diversity point matters. Captive breeding can raise numbers and still fail, if all the offspring descend from a handful of parents. Careful pairing to maintain genetic diversity is what turns a breeding programme into a conservation programme. Mention it and you are answering at a higher level than “they bred more pandas”.
The Convention on Biological Diversity
The CBD is a United Nations treaty aimed at promoting sustainable development and conserving biodiversity, signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
Objectives: conservation of biodiversity using a variety of methods; the sustainable use of biological resources; and identifying and protecting marine areas beyond national jurisdictions.
The Nagoya Protocol is the part ensuring fair sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
Signatory countries agreed to design and implement national strategies for conservation and sustainable use, and to organise international cooperation and further meetings.
Nagoya is the environmental justice clause hiding inside a biodiversity treaty. Historically, genetic material was taken from biodiverse countries, developed into profitable products elsewhere, and the country of origin got nothing. Nagoya exists to stop that. If a question asks about equity in conservation, this is your example.

Point 3: the wider effect
Protecting their habitat also protects the many other plants and animals sharing that ecosystem, as with mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains.
A popular species is a lever for protecting an unpopular ecosystema fair criticism is worth adding: funding follows appeal rather than ecological need

⚠ Common mistakes
Mixing up ex and in situ. Ex means outside; a zoo is ex situ even if it is in the same country.
Calling a panda a keystone species. It is a flagship; the sea otter is the keystone example.
Treating zoos as a complete solution. They cover a tiny fraction of species.
Saying CITES bans all trade. It regulates and licenses it.
Forgetting the CBD is voluntary in effect. Countries agree national strategies; enforcement is their own.
Listing strategies without evaluating. Most marks here are for strengths and limitations.
