Biodiversity as a Planetary Boundary

Every reserve, breeding programme and rewilding project in this topic is working on the same global problem. The planetary boundaries model puts a number on it: how much biodiversity loss can the Earth system absorb before it stops behaving the way it has for the last ten thousand years?

The model, briefly

You met this framework in 1.3. The planetary boundaries model outlines nine critical processes and systems that have regulated the stability and resilience of the Earth system during the Holocene epoch — the roughly stable period in which agriculture and civilisation developed.

The model measures how far human disturbance has pushed each process, and aims to highlight where action is needed to avoid abrupt and irreversible changes. Staying inside all nine is the safe operating space for humanity.

Definition The biodiversity planetary boundary is the limit within which humanity can safely operate while maintaining the Earth’s biodiversity. It is often referred to as biosphere integrity.

What biosphere integrity actually covers

Notice the link back to 3.1. Genetic diversity and functional integrity are the same two ideas you met as “genetic diversity” and “resilience”, scaled up to the whole biosphere. This topic is one argument, not five separate ones.

Where we currently sit

The amber band is a zone of uncertainty, not a safety margin. It marks the range where scientists cannot say confidently where the real threshold sits.
Why “already crossed” is not the same as “too late”. Crossing a boundary raises the risk of abrupt, large-scale, irreversible change. It is not a switch that has been flipped. The whole point of the model is to show where effort is most urgently needed — and biodiversity is one of the boundaries where recovery is still physically possible if the pressures are removed.

Action at four levels

Moving back inside the boundary needs measures implemented at every level. None of these works on its own, and it is worth being able to give examples at each.

Discuss the usefulness of the boundary

Discuss the value of the planetary boundaries model for guiding biodiversity conservation. (4 marks)

Strength 1 It turns a vague problem into a measurable limit, showing clearly where human disturbance has become dangerous. Strength 2 It communicates urgency effectively and links biodiversity to other processes such as climate change and land-system change. Limitation 1 The exact position of the boundary is uncertain, and measuring biosphere integrity globally is difficult. Limitation 2 It is a global model, so it says nothing about which countries are responsible or where the losses fall. Judgement Valuable for setting priorities and showing urgency, but it must be paired with local action and a framework that addresses fairness. It tells you the scale of the problem, not who should fix it remember the model is a model, so the limitations from 1.2 apply to it too
