Two people can agree completely that a species should be saved and still argue bitterly about how. That is not stubbornness — it is because they hold different environmental value systems, and those values point towards different strategies. This page is where 1.1 comes back and does real work.

How value systems shape strategy
Neither column is the correct one. Where a person sits on this spectrum decides which strategy looks obvious to them, which is exactly why conservation arguments are so hard to settle.
Ecocentric perspectives
Focus on the intrinsic value of biodiversity — nature matters regardless of its usefulness to people.
Prioritise low-intervention in situ strategies: minimal human interference, carried out within the natural habitats where species live.
Typical example: setting aside large areas of land as wilderness reserves or national parks, such as the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland.
Rewilding, with its aim of stepping back and letting systems self-regulate, sits firmly at this end.
Anthropocentric and technocentric perspectives
Focus on the economic and societal value of biodiversity — what it provides to people.
Encourage scientific interventions: zoos, gene banks, captive breeding and ecotourism.
Typical example: a conservation breeding programme for European bison at the Highland Wildlife Park in Scotland.
Technocentric views in particular trust technology and management to solve the problem, rather than trusting the system to recover on its own.
A neat way to test which perspective an exam scenario reflects: ask what is being counted. If success is measured in visitor numbers, revenue or animals bred, the framing is anthropocentric. If it is measured in habitat left undisturbed, it is ecocentric. Then say so explicitly — naming the value system is usually worth a mark on its own.
What makes conservation succeed
Only one of these five is a biological factor. The rest are social, political and financial — which is exactly why this is ESS and not just ecology.

Why community support usually decides it. A reserve can have funding, laws and excellent science and still fail if the people living around it see it as something imposed on them. Conversely, communities with a stake in a project will protect it long after the funding runs out. If a question asks which factor matters most, this is a defensible answer — provided you justify it.
Environmental justice in conservation
Conservation efforts should ensure different social groups receive a fair share of the benefits and burdens.
Benefits include improved fish stocks, healthier ecosystems, tourism income and recreation. Burdens include restrictions on fishing, farming, hunting or access to land.
Involving stakeholders in decision-making is how those are balanced.
The UK’s Marine Conservation Zones are established to protect marine habitats and species while also considering the livelihoods of local communities.
Fishermen, conservationists and local residents are all involved in the decision-making process, balancing ecological protection against economic and social needs.
This collaborative approach spreads the benefits, such as improved fish stocks, across social groups, while managing the burdens — such as fishing restrictions — fairly.
This is procedural justice from 1.3 again, and it explains a lot of conservation failure. Projects that excluded local and indigenous people, sometimes evicting them from land in order to protect it, produced resentment and poor outcomes. Involving stakeholders is not politeness; it is what makes the protection hold.

Benefits such as recovered fish stocks, healthier ecosystems and tourism income may go to a much wider group, or to people elsewhere.
Point 3: procedure
Stakeholders including fishermen, conservationists and residents should be part of the decision-making, as with the UK’s Marine Conservation Zones.
Point 4: the practical case
Fair distribution of benefits and burdens also improves compliance, because a community with a stake in the zone will help protect it.
Fair outcomes and fair process — and the fair process is what makes it workthe compliance argument connects justice to effectiveness, which is a strong way to finish

Name the perspective — ecocentric, anthropocentric, technocentric — and link it to in situ or ex situ.
Learn the five success factors with one named example each.
Say that success usually needs a combination of factors, not one alone.

Use stakeholders as a term; it signals you understand who is affected.
Where relevant, argue that fair process also improves the chance of success.
⚠ Common mistakes
Treating ecocentric as “correct”. Both perspectives have strengths and both appear in real programmes.
Confusing anthropocentric with anti-environment. It values nature, but for what it gives people.
Listing success factors with no examples. Named examples are what earn the marks.
Ignoring who bears the cost. Almost every conservation measure burdens somebody.
Assuming laws are enough. Legislation without funding or enforcement changes little.
Leaving out community support. It is frequently the factor that decides the outcome.
