Weather Versus Climate

Weather is what you got this morning. Climate is what you were expecting. Same air, same measurements — the only real difference is how long you watch for. Examiners give away marks here, and students throw them away by using the two words as if they mean the same thing.

Weather: the atmosphere right now

Weather is what the atmosphere is doing above your head today. It is measured at a particular place and a particular time, and it can flip completely between breakfast and lunch.

When you describe weather you are describing short-term changes in:

Because weather changes so fast, it is only ever forecast, never promised. Forecasts stay reasonably reliable for a few days and then fall apart, because tiny differences in today’s air lead to big differences a week later.

Climate: the same air, averaged out

Climate is what you get when you stop looking at single days and start averaging. Take the weather of one region, record it for decades, and work out the typical pattern. That pattern is the climate.

The definition to learn climate = the average weather of a region, measured over roughly 30 years or more

Why 30 years? Because anything shorter is still noise. A run of five wet summers does not tell you a place is wet — it might just be five unusual summers in a row. Thirty years is long enough for the odd freak year to be cancelled out by the others, so what is left is the real signal.

Every year sits above or below the dashed line, but the line itself barely moves. That is the whole idea: weather is the wobble, climate is the level the wobble happens around.
If a friend says “so much for global warming” during a cold snap, they have just judged a 30-year average using one week of data. That is the mistake this whole page is designed to stop you making in an exam.

The clearest way to hold the two apart is to ask three questions: how long, how big an area, and is this one value or an average?

What decides the climate of a place

Climate is not random. A handful of physical controls set it, and every one of them comes up again later in this sub-topic.

Insolation and circulation set the big picture; the sea, the height of the land and greenhouse gases fine-tune it for each location.
Insolation is the amount of solar radiation reaching a given area of the Earth’s surface. Learn the word now — it does most of the explaining in the next two pages.

Telling them apart in an exam

🧩 How to decide in about five seconds

  1. Look for a time word. “Today”, “this week”, “tomorrow” point to weather. “Usually”, “on average”, “every year” point to climate.
  2. Look for a single value. A stated number for one day is a weather observation. A number that is described as typical or average is climate.
  3. Look at the area. One town at one moment is weather. A whole region or latitude band is climate.
  4. Ask if it could change by tomorrow. If yes, it is weather.
  5. Write the reason, not just the label. Marks come from the words short-term, specific, long-term and average.

Weather or climate? Say which, and give a reason for each. [4]

EXAM Q2

A student says a record cold winter proves global warming is not happening. Explain why this argument is weak. [3]

Point 1: wrong timescale One winter is weather; global warming is a change in the 30-year average. Point 2: averages still contain extremes Cold years keep happening around a rising average — a single low value cannot cancel a trend. Point 3: wrong scale of area One country can be cold while the global average is above normal. Weather is one data point; climate is the trend this exact argument has appeared in ESS papers more than once
