A mouse, an oak tree and the mould on old bread look nothing alike. Cut all three open and put them under a microscope and you find the same thing: small units, each one wrapped in a membrane, each one alive. That single observation is the foundation of the whole subject.

Cells are the basic structural unit of all living organisms.
Cell theory has three parts: all living things are made of cells, the cell is the smallest unit of life, and cells only come from pre-existing cells.
Cell theory was built up over about 200 years, as microscopes improved and more organisms were looked at.
It is a theory because a huge amount of evidence from many different organisms supports it — not because it is a guess.
Because cells only come from other cells, spontaneous generation (life appearing from non-living matter) was rejected.
A few organisms do not fit the theory neatly. These are atypical examples, and they do not throw the theory out.
What cell theory actually says
Cell theory is three short statements. Learn them as three separate claims, because exam questions often ask for one of them, not all three.

1. All living organisms are made of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the smallest unit of life.
3. Cells only come from other, already existing cells.
Statement 1 — everything is made of cells. Every organism ever examined, from bacteria to blue whales, is built from cells. Some are a single cell doing everything on its own. Others, like you, are a huge pile of them working in teams.
Statement 2 — the cell is the smallest unit of life. This is the one students skate over. It means you cannot cut a cell in half and get two smaller living things. A mitochondrion is not alive on its own. A ribosome is not alive. A cell is the smallest thing that can carry out all the functions of life at once, so it is the smallest piece you can point at and call it living.
Statement 3 — cells come from cells. New cells are made when an existing cell divides. Nothing produces a cell from scratch. That means every cell in your body can be traced back, division by division, to a single fertilised egg — and that egg came from cells in your parents.
Each card is one claim. If a question gives you two marks, you are being asked for two of these, so write them as separate sentences.
Where the idea came from
Nobody sat down and invented cell theory. It grew slowly, and it only grew as fast as the lenses did. Better microscope, more detail, new claim.
Notice the order. The claim gets bolder each time, and each new claim needs a new organism or a new observation before anyone will accept it.
Robert Hooke (1665) looked at a thin slice of cork through his own microscope and saw rows of small empty boxes. They reminded him of the little rooms monks lived in, so he called them cells. He was looking at dead plant cell walls, but the name stuck.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1670s) ground much better lenses and looked at pond water, saliva and blood. He saw things swimming about. These were single-celled organisms, and they showed that a single cell could be a whole living creature.
Matthias Schleiden (1838) studied plant tissue and concluded that all plants are made of cells.
Theodor Schwann (1839) did the same for animals. Two very different kingdoms, same answer — that is when it starts to look like a general rule.
Rudolf Virchow (1855) added the third statement: every cell is produced by the division of an existing cell.
You do not need every date memorised. What you do need is the shape of the story: better microscopes gave better observations, observations from more and more organisms all agreed, and only then did biologists treat it as a theory. That is the answer to “explain why cell theory is accepted”.
The evidence behind each statement
Marks are given for evidence, not for confidence. Here is what actually supports each claim.

The cell is the smallest unit of life
Isolated organelles cannot survive and reproduce on their own. Only a whole cell carries out all the functions of life at the same time.
Cells come from pre-existing cells
Cell division has been watched directly under a microscope. Sealed, sterilised nutrient broth stays clear for years, so no cells appear in it from nowhere.
The idea this replaced. For centuries people believed in spontaneous generation — that maggots simply appeared in meat and mice appeared in stored grain. Careful experiments showed that if you keep organisms out, nothing grows. Virchow’s statement is the tidy version of that result: no cell, no new cell.
Why “cells come from cells” is such a big claim
Think about what the third statement rules out. It says there is no shortcut into life. Every cell alive right now was made by another cell splitting, which was made by another cell splitting, and so on backwards without a single gap.
That gives you an unbroken chain running back roughly four billion years to the first cells. It is also why the third statement is the one that links this topic to genetics, to reproduction and to evolution — if the chain is continuous, then genetic material is being passed along it the whole way.

Three words to hold the theory
Made • Smallest • From. Everything is made of cells. A cell is the smallest living unit. Cells come from cells. If you can write those three sentences, you have the whole theory.
Careful with the word “theory”. In everyday speech a theory is a hunch. In science it is the opposite — an explanation that has survived a mountain of testing. Cell theory is called a theory because the evidence is overwhelming, not because it is uncertain.

Better microscopes let Schleiden and Schwann examine plant and animal tissue and find cells in both.
Point 4: watching division
Later microscopes allowed cell division to be observed directly, supporting the idea that cells come from existing cells.

💡 Exam tips
Learn the three statements as a numbered list, then answer with as many as the marks ask for.
“Smallest unit of life” always needs the reason attached: it carries out all the functions of life.
If asked why cell theory is accepted, talk about evidence from many different organisms, not about how famous the scientists were.
Names worth knowing: Hooke (named cells), Leeuwenhoek (living single cells), Schleiden (plants), Schwann (animals), Virchow (cells from cells).
Use the word pre-existing for statement three — it is the standard mark-scheme wording.
Exceptions exist, but they are described as atypical. Never write that they disprove the theory.

Saying a theory is just an idea. In science it is an explanation supported by a large body of evidence.
Giving only one statement when the question asks for the theory. There are three.
Calling organelles living. They do one job; a cell does all of them.
Writing that Hooke discovered cells alive. He saw empty cell walls in dead cork.
Mixing up Schleiden and Schwann. Schleiden did plants; Schwann did animals.
Forgetting the word “pre-existing” and just writing that cells divide, which is not the same claim.
