The name comes from architecture. A stone arch is held up by one wedge-shaped block at the very top, and that block is not the biggest or the heaviest – but pull it out and the whole arch comes down. Some species do exactly that job in an ecosystem.

The definition, and why the word fits
Definition
A keystone species is a species that has a disproportionate effect on the structure and function of its ecosystem.
The word doing the work in that sentence is disproportionate. It means the effect is out of proportion to something – usually to the species’ abundance or biomass. A keystone species is not necessarily common, large or obvious. What matters is how much falls apart when it goes.
A useful image to keep in your head, because it explains why removing a single species can change an entire ecosystem.
The consequences of losing a keystone species are worth stating precisely, because they escalate:
Significant changes in the ecosystem.
The loss of other species.
Possible ecosystem collapse.
Run that backwards and you have the conservation argument. By protecting keystone species, the stability of the ecosystem can be maintained, which in turn benefits other species living in it. Protecting one species protects many.
Sea otters, urchins and kelp
This is the example to learn properly, because the chain has three links and examiners like all three.
In the kelp forest ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, sea otters feed on sea urchins and so help to control the urchin population. Urchins graze on kelp. Without the otters keeping their numbers down, the urchins overgraze the vegetation, and the kelp forest disappears – leaving no food or habitat for other species.
The indirect nature of the link is the point. A keystone species usually acts on the ecosystem through another species, not directly.

Notice the pattern across all three. The otter controls a grazer. The beaver builds a habitat. The elephant stops one plant type taking over. In every case the species is doing something that changes the conditions for everything else, which is exactly what “affects the structure and function of the ecosystem” means.

Not the biggest, not the most common
Students often assume a keystone species must be the dominant or most abundant one. It need not be either. Ask instead: if this species disappeared tomorrow, how much else would change? If the answer is “a great deal”, it is a keystone species.
Keystone species come back in a later page of this unit. When ecologists try to restore a damaged ecosystem, reintroducing a keystone species is one of the most effective things they can do – because the same disproportionate effect works in the useful direction too.

Trace the full chain in cascade questions – miss a link and you miss a mark.
Say what the keystone species does, not just that it is important.
Link removal to loss of other species and possible ecosystem collapse.
Have three examples ready in case one is already given in the question.
⚠ Common mistakes
Saying a keystone species is the most abundant. Abundance is not the criterion.
Saying otters protect kelp by eating kelp predators, without naming urchins. Name the species.
Describing beavers as simply “building dams”. The mark is for creating wetland habitat.
Saying elephants damage the ecosystem. Their grazing is what maintains the grassland.
Confusing keystone species with apex predators. Some are, many are not.
Stopping at “the ecosystem would change”. Say which species are affected, and how.
