Habitats

A habitat is a simple idea with a one-line definition, so it looks like an easy mark. The catch is that it sits in a family of six words that all sound similar, and mixing any two of them up costs you the mark. Sort the family out once and you are done.

The definition, and only the definition

Examiners want six words: the place where an organism lives. Not “where it eats and breeds”, not “its role in the ecosystem” — that is a niche, which is a different idea. A habitat is an address, nothing more.

Habitats come in every size. The Sahara is a habitat. So is a rock pool. So is the gut of a cow, as far as the bacteria living there are concerned. What matters is that it is somewhere a particular organism can live, not how big it is.

Where habitat sits among the other words

This is the part worth five minutes of your time. Each of these terms sits inside the next one, like a set of boxes.

The one boundary students blur is habitat and ecosystem. A habitat is only the place; an ecosystem also includes everything living there and how they interact.

Quick test on yourself: if a question asks for a habitat and you answer “it eats insects at night”, you have described a niche. A habitat answer names a place.

Two ways to describe a habitat

When a question asks you to describe a habitat, there are two angles, and the best answers use both.

By geographical location

This is the where-on-the-map answer. Polar habitats are found around the North and South Poles. Mangrove swamps are found on tropical coasts. This tells you roughly what conditions to expect, because latitude controls temperature and light.

By type of ecosystem

This is the what-it-is-like answer. Grassland, desert, wetland, rocky shore. The useful thing about this description is that it works in more than one place. Grassland habitat turns up as prairie in North America and as savanna in Africa — different continents, different species, but recognisably the same kind of place.

🤔 Why does the same habitat type appear in different places?

Because habitats are made by conditions, not by geography. Wherever you get moderate rainfall, a cold season and grazing animals, trees struggle and grasses win — and you end up with grassland. It does not matter whether that combination happens in Kansas or in Kenya.

That is why prairie and savanna look so alike from a distance despite sharing almost no species. Same conditions, same kind of plant does best, same look. You will meet the full version of this idea, convergent evolution, on the Biomes page.

A habitat always contains a community. No habitat holds just one species. When you name a habitat in an answer, it is fine — and often better — to add “which supports a community of many different species”.

Worked examples

WORKED EXAMPLE

Define the term habitat, and distinguish it from the term ecosystem. [3 marks]

Step 1: give the definition exactly A habitat is the place where an organism lives. Step 2: define the second term An ecosystem is a community of organisms together with the non-living surroundings they interact with. Step 3: say what the difference is, in one line A habitat is only the physical place, whereas an ecosystem includes the living community and the abiotic conditions as well. Definition + definition + the actual distinction “Distinguish” always needs a comparison sentence. Two definitions side by side is not enough.
WORKED EXAMPLE

A student writes that a rock pool is “a population of crabs, limpets and seaweed”. Correct the statement and explain the error. [2 marks]

Spot the error A population is all the individuals of one species. Crabs, limpets and seaweed are three different species. Correct it The rock pool is a habitat, and the crabs, limpets and seaweed living in it together form a community. Population is one species; community is many
WORKED EXAMPLE

Describe the habitat of marram grass in two different ways. [2 marks]

Way 1: type of ecosystem Marram grass lives on sand dunes, a coastal ecosystem with loose, dry, salty, nutrient-poor sand. Way 2: geographical location Sand dune habitats are found along temperate coastlines, for example around the coasts of northwest Europe. One answer by ecosystem type, one by location The question said “two different ways”, which is a direct hint to use both angles.
