Social Learning as an Explanation of Obesity

You do not learn how to eat from a textbook. You learn it by watching — parents, siblings, friends, people on a screen. Social learning theory takes that obvious fact and turns it into a testable explanation for why weight, of all things, seems to travel through friendship groups.

📘 What you need to know

The four mediational processes

ARRM is what separates social learning from plain behaviourism. Behaviourism only allows stimulus and response; SLT says there are thinking steps in between, and each one can fail.

ARRM: the four steps between seeing and doing Attention you notice it Retention you remember it Reproduction you can copy it Motivation you want to LEARNING the behaviour PERFORMING the behaviour Learning and performing do not have to happen at the same time. Something seen at school might not be reproduced until much later at home.
The split down the middle is the exam-relevant part: attention and retention give you the learning, reproduction and motivation decide whether it ever shows up as behaviour.
The delay between learning and performing is why SLT beats plain behaviourism. A child can absorb a habit from a parent at six and act on it at sixteen, which no stimulus-response model handles well.

How it applies to obesity

Research support: Christakis & Fowler (2007)

Christakis & Fowler (2007): risk by relationship increase in a person’s own risk when that relation is obese you friend sibling spouse +57% +40% +37% A friend outranks a sibling and a spouse. Genes cannot explain that. Nor can a shared kitchen, since the spouse shares one and the friend usually does not.
The ranking is the finding. If shared DNA drove this, siblings would top the list; if a shared household drove it, spouses would. Friends coming first points at something social.

EXAM QUESTION

Evaluate one explanation of one health problem. [22]

Step 1: outline SLT properly Bandura, observation and imitation, vicarious reinforcement, and ARRM as the four mediational steps. Step 2: apply it specifically to eating and activity Friendship groups as role models, group norms, following the norm to stay included. Step 3: use the network study with its numbers 12,067 people, 1971 to 2003, friend 57% / sibling 40% / spouse 37%, strongest between female same-sex friends. Step 4: evaluate on scope and on method Multifactorial nature of obesity, selection versus influence, measurement consistency over 30 years, one community. Strongest single point: the friend-beats-sibling ranking rules out a purely genetic reading

Perspective

Obesity cannot be reduced to a social learning model. There may be a biological basis such as hormonal dysfunction, and there is also the influence of social media pressure to look a certain way, which can create its own dissonance: an impossible ideal, followed by comfort eating as a form of self-medication. A full account needs several levels of explanation at once.

Bias

With a very large sample collected over decades, bias is almost unavoidable. Consistency of measurement, quality of record keeping and the fact that the data came from one community all threaten validity and reliability. Naming which specific bias you mean is what earns the mark.
